Campag Double Rings the Same as Triple?

Posted on
  • Question:

I have an early 00's Campag Record triple crankset.
I already have a 30t inner ring for it, but am in need of the two outer rings (probably either 53/39 or 52/42 I think they did, or other). Does anyone know whether I can just buy the double rings and use those for the two outside ones? The BCD is the same on the triple/double so that shouldn't be a problem, but I was wondering whether there was anything specifically about the tooth profile or otherwise that makes them specific to a triple?

    Cheers

  • you'll be alright with same bcd campag (and others)

  • Cheers rive, I assumed as much but campy stuff can be darned expensive so I thought it best to be sure

  • Campag triples are 135mm and 74mm BCD (inner) I've got a NOS 42 if you're after one

  • As Mr Bump says, the outer two BCDs are the same double and triple.

Middle triple rings are differently profiled and ramped / pinned to help the chain up off the granny to the middle ring, though, so are triple-specific - plus a 40T was done on triples for the 30-40-50 combo. It wasn't available as a ring option on the doubles.

We have some steel triple rings in stock & I have checked the campag stocklist in Italy for alloy - but they are showing no remaining stock. I have mailed them to ask if they have anything not shown on the stocklist for you (it occasionally happens) but I'd be surprised TBH.

Depending on the design / range of your chainset, you "may" with a bit of shimming (required due to thickness differences in the rings), be able to use the current Centaur Triple rings, if your chainset is Record Triple and has the "hidden" bolt behind the RH crank. Because the ring is supported on both faces in this case, the ring thickness is important - hence the possible shimming.

  • didn't know about the specific ramping and pinning, learn something everyday

ta specialities 'vento' range have triple specific rings > http://www.specialites-ta.com/gb/plateau-vento.html

  • Neither did I. The Vento may be what I end up going for, because otherwise this quickly becomes a very expensive excercise...

  • I used TA ring on the outer/Campag middle, these didn't have any ramps nor lifting pins, and shifted perfectly. The advantage of the earlier 8/9 speed Ergos is that there are about 7 trim shifts for the front derailleur, you can shift anything with them.
