  • Err what

    Pretty sure that's bollocks.

I've always assumed as far as the law is concerned, lights have to be fitted to the bike.

  • If capable of emitting only a flashing light, it must emit at least 4 candela.

Think my 1500 lumen light covers this....

  • you have a 1500 lumen light without a steady mode ?

  • 4 x steady in decreasing intensity
    1 x flashing

and yes the flashing is fking mental

  • If it has steady modes, it's not a light capable of emitting only a flashing light so I don't think it qualifies.

  • When did this turn into the helmet thread? Moar tales of life-threatening stupidity, pls.

  • Just to turn this thread back to its origin...

Me cycling at pace in bus lane down Woburn Place towards Southampton Row.

Black cab had been tailgating for most of the Woburn.

Taxi overtakes and when rear wheel is in line with me notices ped signalling for a pickup, so does the standard indicate mid-manoeuvre towards the pavement, with me still on the inside. As he can no longer see me I guess I dont exist.

I cant overtake as on the inside with the front end of the vehicle closing against the pavement fast and emergency braking would see me caught between the taxi and the kerb. Pull out the sideways-hit-the-ground-running dismount onto the pavement and as I'm still holding onto the handlebars Im able to fling the bike out of harms way but quite a long way across said pavement, cartwheeling between peds (missing everyone fortunately).

Many scuffs, tears etc to bike components, and extremely rattled nerves. I go over to taxi window to be told "You shouldn't undertake".

Only had sense to reply "****ing taxi drivers." before he and his fare drove off into the sunset.

  • Riding in primary at speed to get from feeding some cats to a train station. Road links two suburbs but doesn't have much on it.

Car joins from the right, exiting some kind of business site. It's turning sharply enough to give me space, but definitely cant go from "level with my cranks" to safely past before the next traffic island.

Red traffic light at a junction 1/4 mile later, she's doing a 1000 yard stare whilst I loudly ask "ARE YOU TRYING TO CAUSE AN ACCIDENT?" at the driver's window.

    Muppet.

  • Didn't brake during this incident, but sped up slightly and moved an extra inch or two from the kerb, partly to avoid a puddle and rotting leaf/twig debris, and also to emphasise the impossibility of squeezing through.

Happened to me a couple of months back except he clipped my wheel and I got a face full of tarmac. Didn't let him run away though.

  • Pretty sure its 'up to 1500mm from the ground' or illegal

Well, today I learned something new.

Not sure how they are worse than no lights, though.

    please elaborate.

    oh and hope you're ok

  • 2013-07-14 - Rider Down. 142 Old Street (London)

Me :( Riding past LMNH towards the roundabout. I'm in the left lane doing about 20mph same as the rest of the traffic. Guy hails a taxi on my left. Cab infront of me driving between the two lanes suddenly swerves left and stops, indicating as he turns (still unsure about the indicating, pending CCTV). I make a split second decision between going into incoming traffic, smashing into him or slamming my brakes full on and going over the bars. I choose the third option. Next thing I know my face is up against the tarmac (quite an effective stopping device). I don't lose conciousness but it does take me a second to realise what happened.

He kept apologising, offered to drop me off to hospital. At one point he had a handful of cash in his hand while I was busy getting witness details. But he quickly put it away once the ambulance got there. All in all I went to A&E, just a few manly yet inconvenient bruises, nothing that will stop me riding home tonight. But my face didn't take too well to being used as a braking surface. I had them x-ray my wrist just in case but it's fine.

More importantly did anyone see this? did I go down in style?

He really started pissing me off when he pretended to take pity on me. Then trying to talk me out of calling the ambulance. Come to think of it I was too calm. Didn't even call him a cunt! Bad show!

  • Did you get the po-po involved?

  • Me? No I gave him a slap on the wrist and took enough money for the upgrades I had in mind. That's after a couple of weeks to make sure I'm actually OK, and to gather enough evidence in case he was a dick, so I could go the legal route and get rich.

  • that second picture is brilliant.

  • riding along embankment last night cruising with traffic - headset comes loose and handle bar flops forward. Luckily, I was wearing my brown underpants. Unsure why all 4 bolts were loose... I can't imagine anyone would want to steal them.

  • What kind of headset has more than one bolt?

  • I'm guessing Keramic meant the stem handlebar clamp? I would advise some blue Loctite!

  • Yeeowch

You might want to work on your 'selfies', itsbruce.

    ;)

  • 6 o'clock this evening heading up Dalston lane towards lower clapton road, I just get to the lights opposite Mare street when some wanker on a mountain bike decides to ride out onto the crossing straight in front of me. I smashed straight into him go flying the bounce up straight into adrenalin fuled expletive mode and the cunt jumps on his bike and scarpers down Mare street as I'm shouting "and you're just gonna fuck off then wanker". Plenty of people about checking to see if I'm alright and in utter disbelief that he just fucked off.

Couldn't tell what the damage to me or the bike was but the bike looked a mess, handle bars had done a 180 and the brake levers had popped out of their mounts. So carried me and the bike home (just round the corner, fortunately) and looks like I've not got anything more serious than big old bruises to my hands and legs and after checking the bike everything's fine with that too.

    Lucky, very lucky!

  • Bloody cyclists.

  • Welcome to Dalston?
