• Put it against a straight edge....see if it has any bendage.

  • Beat me....^ that kind of thing.

You should, with a little bit of mandraulics, be able to manipulate it in there.......it's an interference fit, and is tight at the best of times.

  • pictures?

Will put in a minute. I am struggling uploading it.

  • Can you get the forks out and check that the 2 little 'flaps' of the T cut have not been bent in that prevents your stem shaft from getting any further in? Might be just millimetric, might not.

  • Finally, just managed to make it work. Problem I had was the upper race not sitting properly on the head tube which result in play that I could not get rid of until I tried a different race I got from another member.

it has, very slight, but i think it would be enough to stop it going in.

i tried the quill stem expander bolt trick, but no luck so far.

  • ElGato: more pictures! this bike looks amazing(from what i can see)!

  • epic! that is a beautiful restoration job.

  • OK so had a good look at my garden acquisition- its a Royal Enfield Lightweight sports with 4560-8 stamped on the rear drop out. Put some 700c wheels in for a look see and looks alright. Not looking to make this period correct so going to leave off the rod brakes and chainguard, looking more towards the Pashley Guv'nor as inspiration maybe brakeless fixed?? British racing green paint not in great condition which is a shame as if re-sprayed I will loose the original graphics with the lovely gold lining.

    soz for crap pic-

  • The stopwatch on the bars is full of win.

  • epic! that is a beautiful restoration job.

    Thanks luckyskull.
Funds permitting I will start a Bates during the autumn/winter.

  • I had to have this repainted as it was in primer when I bought it.

    That's EPIC!
Are those the brakes that I sold you?

  • Yes those are the ones, thanks. I saved them for the Bates that I had in mind starting but this came along and couldn't resist. So will have to look for a front one in due course.

i tried the quill stem expander bolt trick, but no luck so far.

    Any luck?

  • I think it looks bent enough (at the end of the threaded part) to stop it going through.....without getting hands on it, it's hard to tell though. An engineering firm, or someone with a die big enough to run over the threads all the way up, might straighten it out....have you tried threading the nut to the very top a few times?

That flying gate! Very fucking nice...... And a lovely merkens stem too!

  • Some serious bike envy going on here! LOVE luckyskulls BSA with the deep drop bars. I posted my BSA up on here recently, it's about the same vintage, has the same Philco front brake but cable operated not rod.
    c. 1933. When I stripped it down I found the remains of the original burgundy paint on the fork stem.

  • I picked this up several years ago. It didn't sell on ebay and I contacted the seller after the auction and did a deal - swapped a pair of 28" tyres for it.

No idea what it is. Been told could be a Hercules. Very lazy 30's frame angles.

  • Pre 1950's rides of LFGSS:

Readers wives, old ratty beaters, paths, track irons, geared,
L'eroica steeds, club racers, roadsters... All are welcome.
If its older than the 1950's( 1900's, 10's, 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's) show us what you have got.

Lucky Skull, why have you not posted Gillott here or at least linked to it? I will withdraw all my goodwill.

OK I'm linking your build, ha, ha!!!

  • I have a long way to go on the Gillott. I want to fully restore it. ...... so have to save up more than a little funds.

  • ^ this will look so good when finished!

tried expander bolt, running lock-ring up and down..... it is still bent. and cant get the stem in...... going to try and track down an engineering firm.
