  • Ha, yeah might not be worth it... train tickets these days would prob cost me/you the price of a new amp anyway!

  • Nothing wrong with Yamaha kit. I had a set of Yamaha speakers for a number of years that I had no complaints about.

However, its always worth looking around the likes of Richer Sounds or even ebay for deals - particularly on amps. Richer Sounds tend to do a decent deal on Cambridge Audio and if you can get a "manager's special" on one then even better.

Out of interest, what are you using as a source - CD, MP3, Vinyl?

  • Amp is this... http://www.hifiengine.com/library/pioneer/sx-550.shtml
With an Airport in the Aux/Mic, and a B&O Beogram 1203 in the Phono. I think.
The turntable doesnt have a pre amp so not sure whats going on there to be honest.

  • When I got my speakers I was advised that they wouldn't sound great until they had been run in for a few (24 - 40 hours.)

    Maybe that would help too?

  • Nope, they were second hand...

  • Where are you based? I'm currently unemployed and riding around London aimlessly most days so happy to check it out. Can't give expert opinions but I know enough to see if it's a hardware problem or just simply room positioning issue.

  • I'm just by Viccy park. I just tested against some other old kef speakers I have and the regas have twice the base and half the clarity. Blown tweeters? Or just knckered? Annoying as they look beautiful... Suggestions?

  • Should I just buy this... http://www.johnlewis.com/yamaha-a-s300-amplifier-silver/p231332218 ?

If you're going to buy a new amp I'd save £35 and get this instead, personally:

  • Cheers but that's ugly as sin... I know it shouldn't matter... but...

  • Something sounds wrong for sure, ignore the amp. If it's ok with other speakers, then it's the regas. Still could be solved with positioning or bunging up the bass port. Worst case is a driver has gone...

  • There is no base port and I have no idea what the driver is? Or how to repair/replace it?

Ha, OK. Well if you're around Thursday afternoon or evening I could drop by, have a look and give you a plan to sort out the sound - without spending more! Just looked at some Rega EL8, the do have a rectangular bass port at the bottom of the speaker box (they are the floorstanders?) I imagine these speakers will need loads of room to breath otherwise will induce boomy, muddy bass. Hopefully it's not a blown driver or tweeter. Technically not hard to replace, but hard to match units sound wise when replacing.

BTW, the driver is the name for the speaker cone, and the magnet behind it. Works like a piston - in and out. A big magnet around the outside of a coil, the voltage from the amp (via speaker cable) pushes and pulls the coil forward and back at high frequency. The coil is attached to the speaker cone and this vibrates the air to create sound.

  • That could be amazing man! Will drop you a pm...

  • If anyone is near E3 I will pay beers for them to pop round and inspect...

I'm not sure what it could be... amp/speaker power combo no good? Maybe I am plugging the wrong things into the wrong things reg pre amps etc? I have a turntable and an Airport going into the Phono and Aux? The turntable doesn't have a pre amp but no idea if the Aux or Phono channel it's plugged into does have one?

Plug in a pair of headphones to your amp. When listening via headphones does it still sound awful?

  • This: Rega El8 - pink fish media suggests that the EL8 isn't a traditional bass-reflex cabinet design - so plugging the port at the bottom might not have as much effect.

  • Brilliant. Now my record player dies... anyone with one going spare/for sale? If not it's a trip to Richer Sounds...

  • hi fi expensive business

  • Yep... getting that way...

  • sonos - talk to me, what's it all about? what are these sonos 1's about?

  • Sorry, you appear to have accidentally posted in the audiophile/hifi thread...
    ;-)

  • Ha! I walked into that one true

  • yeah fuck it I don't need that shit, got a Linn Axis a decent amp, nice Tannoy Mercury speakers

    fuck the MP3 man!

  • but........at the same time, tell me what it's about :P

  • A modular system of wireless library/streaming hub and active speakers which can be placed in as many rooms as you like and volumes controlled independently.

Spawn of our modern obsession with convenience and as such will probably sell very well.

My dad has a sonos setup and it sounds okay, which is good enough for most people. For them its perfect as they would never sit in a chair and listen to an album, just want good choons around the place.

  • ta

    don't need it then!
