I'd go with an older ride, something known to keep the weight down.
It's good to look out for chainsets that you can split, then you can use one of the rings on its own up front fairly easily.
Cant really say I've had much trouble with conversions apart from the odd stuck part oh and trying to remove a hyperglide on a back wheel that wouldnt budge, 2nd hand wheels are cheap anyway I guess.
