If the LBS have suggested you need complete new drivetrain then chances are you do.
Will replacing part of the drivetrain work? Probably. Partially. For a while.
Post pics of your chainrings and cassette and we should be able to tell you how worn they are.
That said though it's also good to know how old bike is, have any of drivetrain been replaced yet? If so which parts and when.
The chain (pretty much) always wear out first and I find nothing destroys chainrings and cassettes like a worn chain. Even if cogs don't look too bad if they been used for a while with poor condition chain they will be done for.
A new chain may feel better superficially ie on the workstand (or may not, may run like crap) but will not be so nice when under load.
