Zonda Single Speed Issues

  • Hi

I have a Zonda rear wheel with a Campagnolo hub, it came with the original 8 speed cassette however I want to make this a single speed.

I bought a Gusset 1-er "campy fit" cog however the splines are way too deep on the new cog in comparison to the original cogs from the cassette and the spline pattern is also slightly different. I also bought a pack of halo spacers and these don't fit either, the diameter of the spacers is too small for the hub body.

Does anyone have any ideas of what will work on this hub or if it's even possible?

Really want to try and use this wheel as it matches the front wheel and cant't afford to change the hub.

here's a few pics to help.

  • Managed to add some links with pics

  • Campag cassettes used to be assembled from rings and spacers; lots of well established shops will have and old stock of these. Obviously these are not single speed cogs, but I'd say there'll be little detriment to function.

If you can't find them locally, try calling the Newcastle branch of EBC and speak with one of the managers. They certainly used to have a rack full!

  • Campag 8 speed has a different spline pattern to the later 9/10 speed. Did you take this into account when ordering your Gusset sprocket?

  • Won't the ramps on normal geared cogs cause bother though? I thought that was the reason for ss specific cogs? I might have to do this if I can't get a ss specific cog though.

Gonna try a few bike shops tomorrow see what they say.

As far as I can tell there's no option for diff campag patterns with the gusset stuff, and I have to say I didn't know patterns changed for 9/10 speed to be honest.

  • It's kinda like when shimano changed from uniglide to hyperglide. Campag's 8 speed spline was called 'Exa-drive', I think. Try googling Exa-drive.

  • Cheers man

  • Might not help you solve your problem, but it should explain why your new cog doesn't fit...

  • You're right, my new cog is for a 9 speed freehub body. Doesn't look like you can get ss specific cogs for the older 8 speed freehubs.

I've read that the 9 speed free hubs were backwards compatible with the older speed hub bodies so think that's my next move. Try find as 9 speed freehub and fit that to my wheel!

Anyone know if you can get spacers for the 9 speed hubs though?
