I've cycled away from the Rozz twice now, both times it was wicked and I felt like a badass Papa Smurf. You'd better know your endz tho, it turns out they don't give up easily and they do a nasty 'overtake and then one of them getting out of the car and running at you' thing. You'll never take me alive, copper.

They may decide to use that vehicle as a weapon, incidentally.
I'd advise it's not worth it. -

Didn't they get their chopper out on you?

I ran about 30 metres from the police once, then I remembered I can't run and gave up.

Oh shit moment courtesy of an oblivious little boy today. Riding home at school chucking out time, I'm in the middle of the road as there is the occasional parked car on my left; not going at a snails pace, but slower than normal because of the hazards. Father with his daughter in tow pop out from behind a parked car, not spotting me at all as they're looking at a car coming from the other way, but they're a bit ahead of me, so it's fine, and I slow down and ride behind them, then BAM! Little kid, the son I suppose, just runs out after his dad, not looking in my direction at all - cue me locking up my legs, fistful of brake, as well as a turn to the right to try and get in front of him, but that sends me into a sweet endo, my bars tapped the kid on the shoulder, which pushed me back down, and the little blighter still didn't notice, running across totally oblivious to his potential doom! The shock meant I was silent through the whole thing, and I just carried on riding as I didn't know how to react!

If your light die, try and be more visible by taking primary more often, it's easier for drivers to see a cyclists ahead of them than hugging the kerbs like a nodder.
What? Get off the road.
Totally nuts to endanger yourself and others for the sake of carrying a few spare AA.
Any idea how invisible a bike without lights is in the dark? Cars and peds can't see you. Not everyone has perfect eyesight. Oncoming traffic makes it harder to see dark bikes. I've driven up behind riders and not spotted them until less than 10 metres - you really want that risk? And coming out of a side road? or being undertaken? I will not see you.
No lights, and any accident will automatically and always be the rider's fault. Hit a ped and it might end up as assault with weapon.
The idiots with only helmet mounted lights are just as bad (illegal btw), when they are looking around, might as well have no lights.
And remember to tip your super-bright lights about 5 degree below the horizontal, or they are just dazzling everyone and that is bad for the rider too.

For most people, getting off the road and walking isn't an option when you live 10 miles from home at 12am in the morning.

Very minor OS moment earlier - was riding along to work in the dark (yet to get electric light in Ipswich), some guy drives past and yells "Something something something LIGHT, ya moron".
Realise I've not turned on my back light. Caught up to them at the traffic lights, with light now on, got a thumbs up and we went our separate ways. Fail.

No excuses, carry some spare lights or some batteries. Or get off the road.

Quite a good piece on lights here
http://www.ctc.org.uk/cyclists-library/regulations/lighting-regulations
The main points of RVLR are as follows:
- Lights (and reflectors) are required on a pedal cycle only between sunset and sunrise.
- Lights (and reflectors) are not required when the cycle is stationary or being pushed along the roadside.
- When they are required, the lights and reflectors listed below must be clean and working properly.
The following items are the minimum required, on a bicycle or tricycle, in order to ride it legally at night:
Front LampOne is required, showing a white light, positioned centrally or offside, up to 1500mm from the ground, aligned towards and visible from the front. If capable of emitting a steady light, it must be marked as conforming to BS6102/3 or an equivalent EC standard.
If capable of emitting only a flashing light, it must emit at least 4 candela.
Rear LampOne is required, to show a red light, positioned centrally or offside, between 350mm and 1500mm from the ground, at or near the rear, aligned towards and visible from behind. If capable of emitting a steady light it must be marked as conforming to BS3648, or BS6102/3, or an equivalent EC standard.

Four amber pedal reflectors are required? Oh, shit.

Yeah. How does this work with clipless pedals? Are they technically illegal at night or something?

So write "conforms to BS6102" on it in biro and you're sorted.

yup, I heard CTT were enforcing this for races after sunset.
Although reflectors are around for some models. Not too aero...

I often worry about them knowing my registration when I cycle away from them
