I think suitable gears are a very indivdual thing. I'd say 48/20 was tending towards the spinny, but that suits some. In fact I'm currently running 48/19 and am very happy with it - I'd intended it to be a winter gear, but I've not bothered changing it and it was fine for the Dunwich Dynamo this year.

I may switch it to the 20 until I can figure out what gear I am happy with on a fixed. At least I can begin riding fixed.
All my other cogs are 16 or 15t.

Hey,
I'm from Cbg as well and interested with this ride.
So, Hefty and Sep aration, we could meet up at the station.
I know the way from Kgx to the bagel shop in brick lane.
My bike is a vintage geared.Cool beans.
Just before 7.30 OK?

Hey Hefty,
Sounds good to me ! -

Was hoping to be able to do this ride as I borrowed part of the route the other week and it was great... Sadly I can't now but the weather looks dry and crisp - glwtr!

Of you of your options 48/20 would be best, 48 - 16/15 wouldn't be impossible but it would be tough.
I'm doing it on 42/15 and there is plenty of 'pull' in the pedals when starting at that gearing.

Orly? But but, he said the route is gentle! I'm on 48/16 - do we think this is a bad idea? I have looked at the elevation on the garmin and have absolutely no idea how hilly it is going to be. I mean I can read the graph in theory but how that will translate into actual inclines in front of me is unclear... I don't want to be the only one struggling up a hill or getting off to walk!

It's East Anglia, it's basically a tree and soil covered billiard table innit?
Disclaimer: may contain hills

As Ludd said, this will be a gentle ride 48x16 is fine really, this ride is pretty flat, only one or two minor hills but nothing that should really trouble us! =)

I doubt if there's anything that would have anyone walknig - such inclines as there are will be gentle or, if not gentle, brief enough to power through. There's not even an equivalent of the climb out of Finchingfield on this route.

So im guessing london to cambridge does not = london to brighton?
-
• #189
No, very different. L2B has the drag up to Turners Hill and the Beacon, L2C has a few minor deflections from the horizontal.
-
• #190
Should be ok then on 48/16 especially for those experienced fixed riders
-
• #191
yeah, I'll be on 48/17 or 52/19
-
• #192
Graaaaaand. I wasn't even worried until hairnetnic said it would be tough!
Excited for a decent ride \o/ haven't done anything past 20 miles since I broke my arm -

I was aiming that at a new to fixed rider who might not have built the legs up much. If you're used to that gear you won't find anything to scare you... It is dead flat...

Hi All,
Count me in, so long as the weather is better than it has been today. Just hoping I can keep up with the 'go fasters'. Not to worry I have the route so if I get left behind it will not be a worry!

Talking of routes, I wonder if we ought to do a simplified route at the start, heading up Mare St to Hackney Central, bearing left into Amhurst, vaguely right into Pembury and then left onto the Lower Clapton Road before hitting the Lea Bridge Road at the big roundabout.
-
• #197
It's much better to ride northbound along the Narroway (which is now permitted), then Lower Clapton Road. Then turn off at Powerscroft Road and go through South Millfields to the Princess of Wales pub at Lea Bridge. Then rejoin Lea Bridge Road.
-
• #198
Oh yes, I've actually only just looked at your current route idea, which is daft and a massive detour. :)
-
• #199
Do you mean we should use that path round through the church's walled gardens, like at the start of the DunRun? I never enjoyed that part of the ride, as a big bunch of cyclists riding through there didn't seem to fit with the place, nor indeed with the one-way section coming down past the church. But it may have changed a lot since I last went through there.
-

No, that path is Churchwell Path. It was a kind of by-pass of the Narroway before that was opened up to two-way cycle traffic. Basically, you can now carry on along the high street to the junction with Lower Clapton Road, Dalston Lane, and Clarence Road and turn right. Much quicker and more direct than all the diversions.
Hopefully going to get my SSback up and running this weekend and will fit the fixed wheel too. If I run a 48/18 on SS will a 48/20 be ok on fixed to begin with?
