    I've never understood the accusation that cyclists are smug. Is this anything other than psychological projection?

    It's actually based on proper research, this:
    A recent three-month survey of mine using BPS approved testing methods, found that 87% of cyclists within a 150cm radius of in-car motorists on British roads exhibit signs of 'acute smugness syndrome' (ASS). The test was a four page multiple choice questionnaire that was filled in by the cyclists as they passed near to the cars. Pedestrians (defined by 'those who have never ridden a bicycle *or *driven in a car') were used as a control category to ensure that ASS was exclusive to cyclists.
