Nice bike film double bill at the Rio this Sunday. I won't be able to go, unfortunately. If you haven't seen "Ladri di biciclette" ('Bicycle Thieves') yet, it's a must. One of the best films of the 20th century.

LOST AND FOUND DOUBLE BILL
BICYCLE THIEVES (U) 2.30
(BBFC Insight: Contains mild language and violence)
(Italy 1948) dir. Vittorio De Sica 85m. Digital.
Lamberto Maggiorani, Lianella Carell, Enzo Staiola, Elena Aitieri.
Vittorio De Sica’s remarkable 1947 drama of desperation and survival was filmed in the in the war torn, poverty-stricken streets and alleys of Rome and came to define a whole new era of film making. A man, hoping to support his desperate family with a new job, loses his bicycle and main means of transportation for work. With his wide-eyed young son in tow, he sets off to track down the thief. Simply told but dazzlingly rich in human insight, BICYCLE THIEVES brought emotional clarity, social righteousness and brutal honesty to post-war cinema.

WADJDA (PG) 4.20
(BBFC Insight: Contains mild sex references)
(Saudi Arabia 2012) dir. Haifaa Al Mansouris 98m. Digital.
Waad Mohammed, Reem Abdullah, Abdullrahman Algohani, Ahd Kamel.
WADJDA is a film that breaks boundaries and challenges traditions. It’s the first feature to be shot entirely in Saudi Arabia, a country where cinemas are banned and women cannot drive or vote, and the first to be made by a female Saudi filmmaker. Wadjda is an 11-year-old living in a suburb of Riyadh who is determined to raise enough money to buy a bike even though bicycles are regarded as dangerous to female virtue. But Wadjda is a rebellious free spirit with an ambition to race against Abdullah, her next door neighbour. It’s a film of many delights and surprises, rich in charm and heart, but on this occasion that’s just the icing on the cake.
