Chain-line conundrum

Posted on
  • Just bought the BLB crankset and put them on a 110mm BB and it gives me a chainline of i think 48mm ish. Someone has this set up on a Formula hub (from the transmission database database)

    Andel + Shimano UN54 110mm + Forumla + EAI = Jaimes

I am struggling to make sense. Does the formula hub not have a 42mm chainline?

    The next line is
    Andel/BLB + Sugino 103mm + zenith/formula + surly = dinosaur

How can the same cranks on different BB's with similar hubs achieve a decent chainline? What happened to that 7mm????

I need to buy a wheel this weekend but this has me beat : (

  • Pretty sure Formula are 42mm. Those cranks have some weird dish in them don't they? Like RPM cranks?

  • Yeah i think they are just generic, taiwanese factory, type ones. Bit gutted, did some research and could have got them cheaper under a different brand name at a different shop. I think Andel are the same as well. FSA Vero look pretty similar as well.

I was thinking of attaching the chainring on the inside of the crank, that would move it inside a good 5mm i think. need longer bolts though. hmm not sure what to do .

  • What about takin them back to BLB and asking them to exchange for ones that will give you the correct chainline?

  • firstly, just because it's in the transmission database doesn't necessarily mean it's an accurate chainline or the correct set up. Some are, some may not be.

Do those BLB cranks have seating on the back to run an inside chairing? if so, maybe the person running the longer spindle length has the chainring on the inside to compensate for the few mill it's being pushed out.

  • The Shimano BB would be JIS- is the Sugino also JIS?

  • AFAIK sugino 103mm is iso which coresponds to a shimy 107mm jis. that chainset should fit well on 107mm un 54

  • AFAIK sugino 103mm is iso which coresponds to a shimy 107mm jis. that chainset should fit well on 107mm un 54

    Sugino 103mm is JIS.

  • andel/blb cranks should be in my experience used with 107 JIS tapered BB.
Sugino 103 BB is JIS not ISO.

the chainline is usually stated as plus/minus 1mm. you can juggle chainline a little bit with sprocket with wider/narrower shoulder.

also face the fact that unless you have an adjustable bottom bracket chainline never will be perfect.

  • ok, so bought a wheel from condor cycles, one of there own brand hubs. Got a Shimano 107 BB and freewheel. I don't think its dead straight but its not bad.
    cheers for the comments

  • Ha Incline

  • Just to further confuse matters, it appears that it depends if you're talking about new or old Andel cranks:

  • Its interesting to note i have seen a mixed response to BLB on these forums, certainly looking back through the process of replacing old parts for decent parts, i would look some more before buying stuff from there.

The cranks come in a nice box which says jack shit about relevant info such as are they ISO or JIS and what lenght BB to use to achieve a track chainline. I am being a numpty or should parts detail these things to save alot of hassle and guess work???

  • Does anyone know if the Andel/BLB cranks are the new version? As Walrus pointed out Andel have a new cold forged version.

    New (113mm JIS)

    Old (107mm JIS)

I bought one yesterday but it doesn't look like there is anything on it which distinguishes the two :(

  • im having a similar problem with espresso hubs showing a 40mm chain line - is this right?
