Chain is skipping

Posted on
  • So ive got a lovely new gazelle with ultegra however:

The chain often skips down a chain ring on the front (tripple) when i shift down.

I think the chain rings are worn down.

    ..Or the cables have stretched

    ..or the chain is knckered

My LBS has said i need 2 new front chain rings a rear cassette and chain. Is this necessary or is there anything i can do to troubleshoot it?

I am berkshire/maidenhead based if anyone is feeling helpful. Ill buy them a pint and a packet of crisps if the can identify the problem.

    Olly

  • pictures might help
if the teeth are knackered the chain may not sit properly and might jump

  • hi are the front teeth pointy like shark teeth on the front chain rings if they are and not blunt then they are worn.
how old is the running gear because if its months then I would try just change the chain first and test ride it
if years and never been cleaned then I would do the chain and cassette its normally these two part that wear first
and like dicki said if you had pictures I might help more

  • The shop it likely to be technically correct. But, remember they rightly aim to get the bike working as best it can and that part of their judgement must be in how soon you're likely to be back (either complaining or spending more money) if they do something that will give a slight or temporary improvement.

Depending upon the condition of your drive train, there may be other options of you're prepared to do the work yourself.

  • If the LBS have suggested you need complete new drivetrain then chances are you do.

Will replacing part of the drivetrain work? Probably. Partially. For a while.

Post pics of your chainrings and cassette and we should be able to tell you how worn they are.

That said though it's also good to know how old bike is, have any of drivetrain been replaced yet? If so which parts and when.

The chain (pretty much) always wear out first and I find nothing destroys chainrings and cassettes like a worn chain. Even if cogs don't look too bad if they been used for a while with poor condition chain they will be done for.

A new chain may feel better superficially ie on the workstand (or may not, may run like crap) but will not be so nice when under load.

  • tl;dr

Replace all the things, buy a new bike.

If parts of your drivetrain are really worn then only a partial replacement will be throwing good money after bad. So replace chain cassette and chainrings may well be best.

  • 1) Almost certainly needs a new chain.

    2) Probably needs new chainrings.

    3) May need a new cassette.

If 2) and/or 3) need doing, then just doing 1) won't solve the problem and your new chain will get trashed in double-quick time.

Chains are just as much a consumable item as tyres or brake pads and it's a false economy to try and squeeze extra use out of them: see 2) and 3) above.
