Ale, Beer, Stout appreciation

  • I'm well into the 3%ers, great for a first pint, especially if you're starting early. I'm pretty lightweight so it's frustrating when a bar has a lot to offer but I can only manage a few before falling asleep amongst chatting friends at 11pm.

The newly reformed and somewhat more responsible hippy is of the opinion that halves are fine when tasting a large range of beers.

  • The other day I had Thronbridge Coffee Mil Stout; it was 'orrible shifted to Beavertown Black betty for the rest of the night and woke up with a hangover next day.

    Worth it.

  • Mate just got a whisky advent calendar... I had the brilliant idea of doing the same thing for myself with beer. So, I'll probably focus on Belgian and German brews with some British stuff to make up the numbers. I'll try and get 24+ beers I've never had before and it'll be one a day.

  • Just get a 24 box, cut 24 doors, and number each one. Easy.

Then do one a day for 3 days, then break, neck 8 in one night, and spend the next 7 days with the dark empty doors as a reminder to how weak and drunken you are......

....or just buy a back up 24 pack I guess..

Halfs are a winner. Especially as you're more likely to get a line glass rather than a brim glass.

That's old hippy. New hippy wants to taste new beers not just get battered for a month.

At the GBBF for example, when ordering halves the blokes would often over pour so you'd end up with 3/4s or something anyway. So, you get to try more beers and it's probably cheaper.

Good one you fucking joker! You'll cane all of them on the first day and then spend the next two weeks teetotal, wondering where all your beer money went.

Should probably admitt weakness, buy a GoPro helmet cam, and film yourself trying the beers. At least you'd have a record of how all those exotic brews tasted. Plus wearing a helmet when in possesion of a big box of beer is no bad thing.

  • I'll probably just stick to the coke and pornography theme. Its an oldie. But its a time for tradition after all.

  • Anybody tried the Brixton Brewery offerings yet?

I walked past their set up on Brixton Station Road last Saturday and they seem to be open and selling direct every Saturday. Seems to be a bit like Kernel - you can stand around a have a bottle there or buy to take away.

Didn't have time to sample anything last week but will have a go this weekend.

  • My local beerfest (billericay beerfestival) does thirds, halves and pints.
Get there early and they will give you a few samples.

A store bought recommendation: Marstens Oyster Stout. Winner.

Old hippy and New hippy sound a bit like Old and New Labour.

I always start 'tasting sessions' with the best intentions..

"highly hopped, notes of lavender... "
    ...
    "tastes like beer"
    ...
    "fuckarnglemofoyahhpartywoo"
    ...
"Welcome to A&E, your usual bed, sir?"

Just like graphics.. "I don't do polly ticks."

  • I've found the CAMRA books are good for finding beer fests. Also I walked past a pub near TCR that does 10% off for CAMRA members. Maybe I should join?

You should probably start a forum drinks thread, we don't have enough of those yet.

  • Good idea - keg vs. cask thread.

  • Had a few Partizan beers at the weekend. The liberty pale and the Mild. Not too keen on the Liberty, but the mild was lovely, more like a porter, chocolatey and smooth. Also had Weird Wit from Blackjack brewery and some Marble Earl Grey IPA. Both of which were damn fine.

  • The what now? Fuck, I thought I'd tried them all. This untappd thign is gonna end me. THere's more?

    Gotta drink em all

  • Went to Marble on Saturday (the original) on a rare trip north. Dobber and Lagonda every bit as good as I remember. The food in there is ridiculously good. If there's one problem with it, it's this - the next pub you go to afterwards is inevitably a disappointment.
