Presumably you're used to cartridge BB?
I tighten the adjustable cup finger tight; fit the lock ring, but don't tighten it up; fit the cranks and try to rock them holding the pedal ends: back off/tighten up the adjustable cup just enough to take out any play when rocking the cranks, then tighten the lock ring.
