Reason why I was confused (apart from never seeing one before) was that in the pictures the lock ring and the 'nut' (none drive side) are always assembled so it looks like they were one thing.
Thanks for finding that adjustable pin spanner; that's far cheaper than the Park Tools one and less risky vis-a-vis fit.
