Most of the old step thru/loop frames were made of low grade steel, to be fair though the differential in weight to even Reynolds 531 isn't all that huge, less than 500g compared to single or double butted.
My mum is 5ft and 1/2" and rode a 20" frame(Actually her Peugeot was a 21), women tend to have quite long legs for their height on average & the advantage being that the headtube is longer thus giving a more upright position straight off. You also don't need half a mile of seatpost hanging out..lol
There's a few BIN on ebay but you can buy new loop frame bikes for under £150 with mudguards etc http://www.bikesdirect365.com/products/Kingston-Sloane%2C-City-Hybrid-Bike%2C-18-Speed%2C-Blue%2C-Ladies%2C-Dark-Blue.html
Just take the left shifter off if you want and leave it on the middle ring

Title says it all really, I am in the market for a small lady's step through bike. In an ideal world with a sturmey archer 3 speed hub on it, but other options possible.
It is for my mum, who is in her sixties, so step through rather than mixte, and ideally not made of pig-iron. She is pretty much 5 foot exactly.
Anyone got anything, before I go on a wider search?
