  • A full sleeved jersey like the cross jersey should do over a LS BL...

  • What kinda weather is the Rapha classic long sleeve good for? The new gold ones are pretty ace.

I need a winter jersey for the type of conditions we're in now... Chilly but not freezing. I've got a good long sleeve merino to layer up with.

'Chilly but not freezing' seems about right for it, although I've also successfully worn it up to about eighteen degrees. It's not particularly thick but it has enough body to lend warmth. It's a pretty versatile jersey, though when it gets down to about ten degrees I go for something thicker.

    Yes.

Unless it was getting towards the lower single figures and was still dry I rode in an LS jersey and LS baselayer (with thermal bibs & legwarmers) for good part of the winter last year.

Keep a gilet, wind jacket or rain jacket in your pocket depending on the forecast and you've got everything covered.

  • I have a desire to buy a three-pack of base layers, but I can't decide between the v-neck and the merino mesh. I therefore have two questions: how important are long sleeves on base layers for winter cycling (the v-necks only come in short), and how durable/fragile is the merino mesh?

  • I've had my first batch of proteam mesh base layers for 3 years without any sign of wear to them except discoloration and that is using each one probably twice a week. Long sleeves are less important in the same way you will put a gilet on before you start using a jacket but long arms are nice when it comes down to +/- 3c It's a fine balance, the arms are also the first thing you want to get rid of when you overheat so I tend to keep to short sleeves because arm warmers are more flexible

  • Rapha glove update: left hand just starting to tingle this morning.

  • In full fingered gloves? Mine were fine in mitts...

Cross jersey isn't warm, it's made from the same fabric as lightweight jersey.

Really? I would have thought the LS would have been heavier for the time of the year it is supposed to be worn in?

  • Buy short sleeve base layers and merino armwarmers from Planet X for £5 to use as baselayer.

If you're racing or training hard the cross jersey is good with a merino or cold weather base layer down to about 3-5C for at least an hour but I wouldn't wear mine on a club run.

  • Im glad i never pulled the trigger on them then! Will have to stick with the standard 3/4 bibs.

  • Just got repaired lycra from Rapha in the post. Thank you.

  • do you think they would repair the peeling 'pleather' off the reinforced shoulder on my softshell jacket?

  • Yes.

Thanks for all the tips folks. Given the winter jersey is on £20 more, I may just hold out and get one of those big boys.

I can just layer up with my current thin longsleeve to get me through til the real cold stuff starts.

  • Winter jersey is a great piece of kit. With a LS BL under will keep you going through most of winter, with a windproof gilet.

The winter jersey has windproof panels so doesn't need a gilet.

I've just ordered a pair of the armwarmers. Let's hope they're nice but not pricey.

  • They are identical to Endura Baa Baa and will last for ages as long as you take care with the seam at the cuff when pulling them on/off over a watch. Which I'm not.

This is very true. For what it's worth, when paired with a LS merino jersey, it was my main "go to" kit for last year's winter. Often went out with a gilet. Really breathable, and I was warm enough on medium paced rides.

  • Does the repair scheme cover general wear on the saddle area of my jeans? I'm sure I could read through the thread to find an answer, but ain't nobody got time for that.

  • Fire them an email, they're happy enough to repair the crash damage of my jacket.
