Wanted: Old hubs or axles for bike shipping

Posted on
  • Hello all, this might be a long shot, but let's see.

I'm shipping some bikes back to my native NZ next week, and am looking for some knackered old hubs or axles to use as spacers to stop the rear triangle and forks from getting squished.

If you have anything taking up space in your parts box you're never going to use, I'd be very interested. I can offer beer in exchange. I'm in Brixton and very happy to pick up.

I'm after two fronts (100mm) and three rears (two 120 and one 130mm).

    Thanks!

    Lewis

  • Have you tried asking Brixton Cycle? They must get rid of loads of packinging materials* when they build up new bikes and some could be useful for you?

*I don't mean bubble wrap and boxes but bits to hold frames in shape etc...

  • I'm in Brixton, I've got a dead 135mm Shimano rear hub you can have...

  • Threaded rod and nuts from screwfix is what i use

Yup. Each end gets a M8 threaded steel rod , 2 washers and 2 bolts. So that's 2xM8 rods (of an appropriate length), 8 washers and 8 bolts per bicycle.

  • Try any LBS as they usually throw out the spacers that come with their new frames. Exceptionally good LBSs will keep them for just this occasion. Failing that get some cardboard and fold 3 or 4 time over then cut to size to fit dropouts. Tape and wrap dropouts/spacers with some extra bubblewrap and "Bob's your uncle" as they used to say in the old days

    Hope that is clear

  • Brixton Cycle has a goodie box with exactly that. The content of such box can vary depending on when you go...

  • If you can't get anything locally I've got a couple of old axles & a couple of rigid plastic front fork spacer protectors, the type you get with a new bike.
    £2 to cover the postage.

  • Or chop up a broom handle and use coach screws.
