  • I'm very sad to hear this news. 'New York' is my favourite record of all time, closely followed by 'Songs for Drella' and 'Magic and Loss', and by numerous other recordings by him. Few days go by when none of his lines and songs spring to mind. He produced a lot of dross, too, especially his œuvre after 1993, but his most expressive lyrics are unmatched in his time.

I saw him play live three times, once in Hamburg in 1993 as part of the Velvet Underground reunion tour, and twice in London in the late 1990s, once at Wembley Arena and once at the Royal Festival Hall (the concert that became the 'Perfect Night' live album).

    Rest in peace, Mr Reed.

It's a different feeling that I have today,
Especially when I know you've gone away.

The past keeps knock-knock-knocking on my door,
And I don't want to hear it any more.

    Ashes to ashes.

As you pass through fire, as you pass through fire,
    Try to remember its name.
When you pass through the fire licking at your lips,
    You cannot remain the same.
    And if the building's burning,
    Move towards that door,
But don't put the flames out.
There's a bit of magic in everything,
And then some loss to even things out.
