The exploring & doing random stuff doesn't make sense for single player but it really does add to the game online; even playing with randoms/just being on your own in free play there's always something interesting to do or someone else in the lobby being stupid.
Still waiting for my free money to come through so I can buy a nice apartment & start modding some nice cars (stuck to two at the moment & neither is really worth modding).
