I suspect it will be both uneconomical and dangerous.
But would be interested to hear what they say.
Edit: What's the A-C on carbon mtb forks for 26" wheels? Might be an option.

Howard- Your Winwood looks very similar to the Poison bikes fork I've looked at. Do you know the a-c measurement? The Winwood site was less than helpful.
Hopefully I'll speak to one frame builder or another at lunch for some advice RE: brazing a tab

The closest fit I've been able to find for my Big Block are the Surly Disc Trucker 26" forks. I emailed Surly and they reckon it should fit up to about a 28c tire. Cheapest I've found them for is around £80 from activesport
edit: They are 376mm A-C, compared to 375mm for standard fork.

Kinesis forks?
Dolan FXE + Kinesis disc fork, job done.
It'll still handle fine, closer to a road bike than track if you want that nimble handling lark, only noticeable difference is a slightly higher BB.
I suspect it will be both uneconomical and dangerous.
It is when the fork blade aren't built to withstand the braking fork of a disc rotor, it's highly advisable to build a whole new fork than just add a tab.

rigid mtb forks are generally suspension corrected sp around 420mm

These things have been running through my mind for months! After doing a similar thing and thought of most of the options here. The pre cursa is great for the money, not going to rust in the weather etc - It is just the fork to add without stupid clearance. I have a black H Plus Son archetype ready to be built on a disk hun because you cant ruin a rim of that beauty!

I think it was 397 - so yeah, not great. Will check though.

Thanks Howard- appreciated
The Surly Disc Trucker forks look like an option for a steel frame- The LBS to work stock them I think, so I may have a look over lunch.
Many MTB forks will have a crown diameter of 50mm, so wont sit flush to a head tube or lower headset

So-
Pre Cursa plus Carbon fork with larger than ideal clearances, ride may suffer a little. Cheap and won't rust.
or
Source (probably) second hand Big Block/ Steamroller/ Rush frame, use Surly/ Traitor/ Pompetamine forks. Will cost a little more, probably closer to what I originally intended. May take a while to source the frame... -

Dolan have room in the rear for 32c, even 35c which mean that you can fit mudguard with 28c without issue.

Cheers Ed - If I got a Pre Cursa rather than a FXE (currently out of stock ) I could get it drilled for rear guards at Neil Orrell's shop
-
• #38
AFAIK it already got a mudguard mount in the Precursa.

Ed - Great- even better. I wonder If I'd be better off getting a smaller frame if I were to go the Pre Cursa route given the higher front end- will have to measure it all up.
Just had a look at the 26ins Surly forks on a complete bike - quite nice and 376mm a-c. Lighter than the Pompetamine by some way too.. However out of stock at the distributors until late Jan

Awesome drøn - Thanks

HT changed to around 72, ST is a normal 73 with the longer fork (395) using 370 as a benchmark (claim length of the Alpina track fork, the road fork with mudguard eyelit likely to be 375).

Just noticed the 55cm Soma Rush that sold on classifieds last week- would have been bang on with the Surly or Traitor fork- shame I missed it....
Waiting for responses form various frame builders about brazing disc tabs and custom forks. I have a feeling that If I want to be riding this bike within the next few weeks the Pre Cursa is the best route

custom fork is likely to be around £200, especially for one with a disc tab.
-
• #45
Yes - I figured that it wouldn't be cheap. Probably a bit extravagant for my needs. I do need to find a Pompino to test out if possible too, as they've had so many recommendations

jacek orlowski will build you a custom steel disc fork (columbus zona) with paint for 130euros.
-
• #47
Bargain- what's lead time and like ordering from Orlowski?
-
• #48
depends on his amount of other work. send him an email and ask him: orlowskiframes@gmail.com
-

Cheers- will do

Turns out Orlowski can get the fork built in 7-10 days- makes me wonder if this will be a standard road fork with an ISO mount added rather than a disc specific fork- though he didn't seem to think this would pose an issue
I did also consider looking for a SS cyclocross frame- which would instantly solve all my a-c fork height worries...
@Dammit- Yes, that does sound like the path of least resistance . I'd have to choose carefully to ensure the braking forces didn't cause issues-Another question for Ted or Oak really to see if it would work
