  • Sucks* to be (near) me.

    *yeah yeah, fuck you physics

  • I didn't attend... Instead, I wrote a very long email to my MP re the debate, stating that in my opinion, to lure the populace onto bikes with zero protection in law is tantamount to corporate manslaughter. I cited examples of very experienced cyclists who had not managed to survive and who had received no justice. I included the cases in his own constituency where two drivers who caused the deaths of cyclists through recklessness were not even arrested. I also informed him of the incident which is most exercising me at the moment: http://www.newsshopper.co.uk/news/bromley/10516263.Catford_man_accused_of_hitting_Chislehurst_cyclist_and_driving_away_not_guilty_of_two_charges/

I would be much happier if the debate had been about MPs, magistrates, judges and CPS and Sentencing Council staff having to cycle to work.

  • Saw the first section of this new CS2 extension yesterday. It's only wide enough for single file cycling. FUCK THAT.

  • no, it is what people want.

  • I don't.

  • neither do i, but

    WE MUST SEGREGATE

  • Decent cycling tracks shouldn't be narrow. The Dutch standards are something like 3m wide in each direction for 150-750 cycles/hour.

  • Decent cycling tracks shouldn't be narrow.

Neither they should only come in effect 6 hours a day, while the remaining hours are used up as a parking space.

  • WE MUST SEGREGATE

thinking a lot about #ShareTheRoad recently, as that's what its mainly all about, no?!

yes, there are areas that can be redesigned, but sharing is caring, yah?!!

  • sharing is caring, yah?!!

Yah, else how will the boy cross the road to get his ice cream?

  • Idea from Carlton Reid about the future

With cars that don’t kill, taxis without cabbies, and HGVs driven by computers not blindspot-afflicted drivers, there will less need for hard infrastructure. Many bicycle advocates believe we’ve started on a Dutch-style 40-year trajectory to getting segregated cycle paths almost everywhere but driverless cars will be here long before the end of that. Why build bike lanes when robocars and driverless trucks will be programmed to know all about space4cycling?

  • I can understand the merits of learning road safety, it is a wise thing to do, but no amount of cycling training will stop a careless motorist behind the wheel, we need safer roads for ALL cyclists. Some roads can be redesigned, wider paths should be the norm when built. Once bikes have an infrastructure, less cars and public transport will be used prompting more money being spent on bike infrastructure and the cycle will continue. So far this year we have had 8 deaths on the road and many others with life changing injurys (another one today), it's time for a change. Lets look to the other countries that have done it right, not to people who think cycling proficiency is the key to the future of London bike safety.

  • What kind of infrastructure are you demanding? Why do you consider cycling so dangerous when medically there is greater risk from not cycling (and it's negative health implications) than cycling?

What is the effect be of differentiating and segregatiing cycling further in a city with limited scope for wholesale infrastructure changes? What might the downsides of this approach be?

    a infra that supports cylists.

why are you so opposed to supporting the use of bikes in the city?

i am not telling people to stop using bikes, quite the opposite, i want more.... but want roads and paths that support this growth....

    stop trolling james.

  • i am utterly in favour of cycling, why are you accusing me of trolling?

The infra for cyclists is not only about segregated lanes. I think we can have both. Some areas could have cycle only areas, other roads need to be re-designed. Having visited many cycle friendly cities i can only see the benefits of supporting the growth of cyclists with a safe infra.

I'm in france at the moment. It is a joy to ride on the cycle paths. They in no way slow down the pace of my journey.

  • See the coroners report from today which slates cycle lanes for implying cyclists should be in dangerous positions and yet advocates more training for all road users (drivers and cyclists).

I do wish people would stop with this inane and infertile polarisation, a product solely of their imaginations. There is no answer, there are several, and I don't know any one involved in cycle training who makes the exaggerated claims for it that its detractors do, just so that they can then knock them down.
It's bad enough in the that echo chamber of idiocy that is Twitter, we don't need to bring it in here too.

But what about the effects of differentiating cycling further? I meant segregation not in the literal sense, but in the figurative sense of making it so different from other modes of road transport.

I do not feel my comment polarised this issue, it stated cycling proficiency is valid but not the key as some have seemed to suggest(have you read all 3 pages?). A redesigning of roads and road policy that takes into consideration the needs of cyclists would be a good thing. I'm not saying i have the answers, I am just a young guy who rides a bike in London every day. I have seen how other european cities have made it work and cycling in these cities can be amazing. All i wanted to do is invite people on a ride to help London become a safe cyle friendly city. It is getting better, but we have a long way to go.

Maybe London is just never going to be the cycling city of my dreams.

Not really sure, i could only speculate, what is your view?......and i am not sure it is a major issue if more poeple use bikes.

People hate bikes and cyclisits in the UK in a way they don't in many cycling friendly cities. Why is this? Because it it a viable mode of transport in the rest of europe? Most people own and use a bike because of safe infra?
