I have an alan super record and the top lug on the headtube started cracking when the headset was installed--really pissed me off! got it fixed with a metal ring round it-still not sure how safe it is.... nice frame btw!

I heard that they're meant to be ok as long as the ring was pre heated and shrunk when cooled
also
thanks! -

Can you fix it with fibreglass
-
• #6
That was a deal for 100 Euros.
-
• #7
i don't know about fiber glass
was an ok deal, had chorus crankset, hs fd+rd, brake calipers (worn in )and hubs with 4 speed freewheel on ma40 rims, one decent, cinelli bars -
• #8
Can you fix it with fibreglass
Definitely not, if that was a genuine question.
Bonding, sealing, filling would only conceal the crack. -
• #9
No- it won't buff out !
Technical term - it's fucked
Yes an Engineering repair can be done.....but the stresses at the bottom of the head tube are very high
I had a lugless 531 the split happened to, fortunately under warranty, it had rings brazed on so no longer lugless...
An Easton alu frame developed splits top & bottom of the head tube- an Oh FEK moment when spotted when doing an annual clean....
Very nice frame for the lounge wall

one possible move is to unbond the head tube lugg from top and down tube, and either fill with alu bonding agent or if poss, ''weld" a bead over/onto the crack

Need to check size of my frame, but would you be willing to sell the forks only?
-
• #12
would rather sell whole
costs of shipping frameset included in price, hardly much difference between shipping forks and whole frame -
• #13
If somebody "unbonded" this I'd be quite interested seeing if I could use it as a pattern to make a slightly improved new lug which might then help a few people out by the sounds of it - for £50 I would buy this and have a go except the finished product would be way way too small for me.

if i was opening a shop i'd keep to to hang
-
• #15
if you could make slightly improved luggs, you may have a niche in the market
the Colnago Dual frames were bonded alu tubes with similar luggs and were built by Alan, so could be said to be prone to the same Achilles heel -
• #16
I think the tubes should be rebonded any way before/after lugg repair

fibreglass no good then for bikes? i was going to use on my bike!LOL

Ive jus brough a vintage raleigh racer. Frame is in mint condition. Frame number is OC12026. Anyone know what year it is and what oc means.

I realise that these comments about filler and fiberglass are in jest (I bloody hope they are anyway).
The only satisfactory repair to this is going to be mechanical (ie an interference fit collar that is heat, dropped on and shrinks into place, preferably on an accurately machined register) or a weld. To weld this properly it will have to come apart and at that point it would seem more sensible to cast a new lug with some added strength / fatigue resistance at the known failure point. This may be by additional ribs or material thickness or by the elimination of stress raisers or better distribution of stress loads through the casting.
Not something I would want to do for financial gain but something I would like to do as a little winter project in my workshop at home.

i like your style, be a good craic to see if it could be done
i have a few waifs and strays i consider projects to see what can be done -
• #21
i think giant and specialized used similar type alu luggs on early crabon frames
-
• #22
no irony -

this can be fixed for a little time and money...you don't have to take it apart either...
not huge amounts of time and money either...shout if you buy it and want it repaired!!!
or....if you'd like to keep it/..I can fix it for you...
safe rolling peeps...x

Ah, good to see the return of the Angel!
Boats?
this has a vertical crack on the bottom of the front of the headtube lugg, Alan's are blighted by this
could be repaired with an aluminium boning agent, sadly too small to fit a ring around headtube, as has been done with similarly distressed Alans
51 cm c-t seat tube
49 cm top tube
50 pounds
