  • That article is apalling. Hehe. got my times back yesterday. spent a grand total of 21 minutes in transition, hanging out, chatting, eating... ffs

Haha I spent 23mins getting comfortable in Bolton, on reflection a tri suit would have been better but it's hard to track one down which is suited to iron distance. I think a two piece set up might be the way to go for next year

  • I wear 2 piece tri suit plus non-bib bike shorts for IM. You just pull the shorts on after the swim and pop them off again after the bike.

  • Chrissy Wellington responds to the ES article
Who I will call the Four time world iron'person' so no one is offended.

  • Went for a swim with my tri club plus assorted others in the Jubilee River this morning, got called hardcore for having run there....

I've never been so proud of myself...

Should I tell them its only 2k?

  • ^^ She's 4 time Ironman world champ. You're comment is idiotic.

    Psssst "your"

Excellent riposte to a truly revolting piece of journalism though. Have that Jenkins you twat.

    Fuuuuuu....

    You're right though - it's a great riposte.

In joke.. had a previous thread nuked at the time for making a sexiest comment.

  • The commentators deserve medals for trying to make that shit interesting.

  • Well I know its not as gripping as football but it is at least a sport that the british are naturally gifted at.

I think the majority of the worlds population would say the exactly the same thing about professional cycling only more so.

  • So...
    Iroman distance in August 2014.
Here's a rough overview of my training plan:
    Swim:
distance covered, and working on timing/ effort levels by end of November. I haven't swum properly in like 5 months (maybe more), the idea is to make it a routine distance so that it doesn't really bother me.

Running wise: 1/2 marathon by end of the year, comfortable and fast.
Build early on in 2014 to marathon, taper off a bit around some exams, rebuild.

    Cycling wise:
High intensity over winter, lots of indoor sessions, some CX, very few long rides (if any).

Maybe do a 1/2 iron at the beginning of summer just to play with distances, transitions and the such-like.

Any advice/ sample training programs (I've got a fairly busy life for the next 7months so going on maximal effectiveness training rather than lots of long hours) would be great!

Right now, I feel like an idiot for signing up and my motivation levels are at an all-time low. But that feeling with me is usually transient, and soon I'll be well into it.

I might blog about it, just to force me to properly train.

  • Any advice for changing the level of trainning from summer output to winter.
My plan is to concentrate on increasing my FTP on a spinbike and some core work in the gym from Rowing, suspension training.

A little outdoor running with maybe one long run a week and zero biking
(apart from when I can't resist it)

Just heard the news about henley too.. guess thats off my race schedule for next year.

  • What's the news about henley?

I'm getting more and more likely to be doing the ultimate tri with you Henry and my club coach is doing IM wales a few weeks later so is going to give me his training plan to base my training off.

  • Challenge Henley is now Challenge UK and is no longer in Henley.

  • Hello LFGSS triathlon people. I have completed a couple of Olympic distance races this summer and am now feeling a bit aimless... Would anyone be able suggest a good half Iron Man event for next summer in the UK? It will be my first attempt at this distance so looking for a relatively gentle one. Hoping putting my name down will motivate me over the winter!

  • Somewhere coastal by the look of their twitter as well...

@mrtea silly question perhaps but are you sure a half ironman is right?

People seem to think that longer distance race is the way to develop but there's serious merit in getting faster over an Olympic or sprint tri. It also doesn't require the same training levels...

I've just got the first draft of my IM training programme and it starts with a 16 hour week and peaks with one 24 hour week. I hope my wife doesn't divorce me :s

  • You sign up then?
Ps my training plan is as always low tech, and shoe-horned around the busiest year of my life so far.
Basically- I'm a run alot, cycle some and swim some. Then some time I'll be found in a gym, and at a yoga class.

I followed this as best I could for 5 months:

    http://triathlete-europe.competitor.com/files/2012/06/Super-Simple-Ironman-Training-Plan.pdf

12:46 at Ironman Austria without any issues

  • Looks good that, maybe too much time spent training, but I'll definitely use it as a framework.

    12:46 is incredible! Good work.

  • ^ awesome time Biaritz.

    That plan looks awesomely simple...

  • Many thanks :-)

It's a good plan and not much when you think about it, but in the end I was only doing this per week (if I could):

2 x 10/13 miles runs + one longer run at weekends or evenings
    1 x 50/60 mile ride at weekends
    1 or 2 x 1500 metre swims

Panicked in final weeks and did a few 4k swims.

My aim was to finish, not smash it, so I concentrated on endurance speed, no interval training.

My main concern was the marathon, but the bike was the bit that hurt. It is the easiest place to make time, so I would work on that more if there is a next time.

  • I should add 18 miles a day commuting by bike to that list...when I wasn't running the commute to get my 2 x 10/13 mile runs in.

  • My plan is roughly
2x 1hr swim - one focused on speed and technique, the other focussed on distance.
3x short run sessions focussed on intervals, hills or speed work
    1x long run
1x long fast paced club ride with a switch to the tt bike when the weather gets a bit better again.
    1 x stretching/core session (yoga/pilates)
    2 x strength sessions

The rest of the week will include a c.10 mile commute on a brompton most days.

This is basically what I've been doing for the last 6 months except I haven't done many long bike rides and there has been only one short run.

  • So which one are you doing?
