Printers may also include optical encoders which you can use to get smoother starts and stops than is possible with a normal stepper. Bonus points for achieving that without using digital logic to manage the speed.
An Arduino starter kit might get him more interested in the physical experiments side of things, and you can connect an Arduino to a Pi using USB, Bluetooth, ZigBee... I should get on with my robot project.
