  • I'm well paranoid about bike theft, me.

How is around Oxford Street for bike thefts?

Going to dinner nr Bond Street tube tonight and best way to get there would be by bike, so with a nice-ish looking bike (pretty classic style rather than modern carbon), both wheels d-locked and a cable lock tieing the brooks to the seat stays, and not staying out too late, should I be alright?

Or would you take public transport?

  • take public transport

  • Stay at home, it's safer

  • I think you would probably be fine, but if it would break your heart to lose the bike don't do it. Basically only ever leave a bike out you don't mind losing

  • Hi Guys,

I start to say sorry for my bad english, I'm Italian and I'm still learning :)

I'll move to London in about 1 or 2 months (at the moment I live in Boringstoke), once I'll be there I would like to commute around the city with my bike for almost everything I need, what I'm asking to myself is: will my bike be safe when I left it on the street?

I have a Fuji Track Comp 09', Alexrims low profile on Novatec hub, Deda Zero 100 stem, Deda Dabar bullhorn, saddle San Marco Ponza, and other generic components.
I am afraid about thieves can stole pieces from my bike like the handlebar which is easy to take off and quite expensive. What should I do? How the cyclists act in London about that problem?
I heard about anti thief screw, but these things really work?
I don't really want take saddle and stem with handlebar every time I have to leave the bike on the street :(

Please help me to find a solution.

Cheers and see you around ;)

  • Hi...

  • Don't lock it anywhere in Hackney or the West End for longer than 2 mins and you might keep it longer than a month

  • Tynan Paste

  • Buy a crappy bike, use that, leave nice bike at home

^I appreciate how old this original post is, but in answer to it I'd say stay well away from the fucking shithole that is Oxford Street, lock your bike outside a nice pub in Mayfair, and then walk up to the restaurant from there. It'll be fine. Was for me. Many, many times.
Also, you can lock a nice bike up in the West End (weekly) and keep it for twelve years (like I did). Just don't choose somewhere too quiet.
Buying a shit bike to avoid getting my nice bike nicked is something I'd never consider, what with lifebeingtooshort etc...

  • Why should I buy a rat bike when I want to enjoy riding mine which is a blade on the street?

    Damned thieves!

    Kinmar range
    or
Scroll (if you can afford them).

  • Off to Peckham tonight and have never really taken my bike there.
Can you cool peeps who live in Peckham give me a safe place to lock?
I'm going to PeckhamPlex so around Peckham Rye would be ideal. Cheers

  • There's a new secure hub at peckham rye station.

  • i've parked a beater on hanover square for 2 plus years without issues
crappy bike proper strong motorbike lock

i have seen other bikes stolen from the same rack though .. usually bikes with cheap cable locks

opportunists will always be around though, bars seats saddles are all relatively easy to remove

  • I think I'll use the new hub at Peckham Rye. Thanks for the headsup.

I user a krypto fahg for rear and frame. I then thread a less secure kryptoflex cable through the saddle bottle mount (kind of securing the saddle) and front wheel. This leaves the bar exposed. It would take about a minute to nick the front end if they wanted, but is it the kind of area that would?

  • hanover square

    Is that in Peckham? ;)

I'm surprised nobody has stolen your good lock.

  • Don't go to peckham. Problem solved.

  • There are bike racks right outside the cinema in Peckham. I've always been okay there, but if you have a nice bike...

The bike hub thing is apparently very good (and right nearby), but I've never been.

  • It's a little gloomy and alley-like just in front of the cinema.

The bike hub was superb. Well lit, lots of space, cameras and dry.
I felt like my bike was very safe there.

    Thanks for the recommendations.
