An SM58/57 recording made in a professionally acoustically treated room or booth, through a Neve preamp and API compressor, to 2" tape (or the latest high bit rate DAW) is a very different proposal to some geezer in his bedroom with the SM58 plugged into some consumer interface.
Of course it is, but I'm talking about that first Bon Iver record, which wasn't made like that - it was made in the dude's bedroom with a 57 plugged into one of those old Pro Tools interfaces, and still sounds phenomenal. Not every record needs Neve/API/tape, or even a decent room for that matter.
