very tempted to make this my first forum ride. Never rode fixed more than commuting distance, but other bike is a tourer.
What's more ridiculous: panting along with molten legs on a fixed or breezing along with a bloody triple chainring?
-
• #85
I don't suppose we'll be doing this ride at a pace that's going to cause people's legs to melt - there will be moments when the fixielords race off at 35mph but we'll regroup as necessary.
-
• #86
I'll probably come and ride back if the weather's ok then, not 100% though so not listing

Hi People,
We are are interested in participating in the ride, we do not have "Fixie Bikes" but we have completed London to Brighton Night Ride. We have hybrid bikes. Are you catching the train back to London or will you be riding back.
I look forward to receiving a response.
Regards,
Marleen

don't worry about what bike you've got, as long as it's in good nick - ie no bald tyres, worn out brakes and the gears don't jam. most of us will take the train back, no doubt a few hardy soles may ride back.
when you say "we" do you mean you and some of your husbands? - sorry, can't resist a pun

I'm quite interested in taking part.
I'm hoping I can get a new bike by then. If not, I'll be riding on the only bike I have at the moment - my little Brompton.- Ludd

I'd like to come along too, and would be very happy to forego the lunch stop in favour of a quick snack stop. Especially as the daylight hours will be at a premium. I have done enough riding at night along moonless, windswept country roads after sunset this last week or so to last me till the spring and want to be out under that ultra violet as much as possible if I am to get through the winter without a very depressing February.

Hello Marleen, this is a relatively 'rules light' forum, almost all rides here are turn up and ride, if there are any special requests from the organiser (particular bikes, speed etc) then they will be in the first post.
Other than that the etiquette is to bring a spare tube or two, someone can always help you fix punctures if you're not confident. The other thing would be to avoid bringing too much gear, as a fixed gear forum we tend to attract those who like to travel light.
But all in you're very welcome to join!
-

What? You've met Howrad and his rucksack, if that's you idea of light then you need to learn a thing or two about weight/mass/lumens or whatever they're called.

If anyone needs to buy pies on the way, the Londis at Much Hadham is open 6.30am to 9.00pm. Original post now edited to make KT Bee's reply look really odd. And to include some pictures that may be misleading.

Hi guys,
A newbie here with a seriously simple question; How long will the whole ride take and will it be quite tough? -
• #96
Might be up for this, will have to ask fiance permission first though.
If I do, will be riding fixed, although may need to change down the gearing before as it's 48/17 or 46/16 at the moment, and not sure my legs will take that all day long at this stage. -
• #97
Out, bollocks. My band playing gig in town that night. Really was up for this. Will in if things change.

I'm game, can someone add me?
whispers will be riding geared if that's okay?
I'm sure someone's mentioned it somewhere already, but what time are we departing?
-
• #99
We'll leave as soon after 9 as possible - we don't need to wait for KT Bee as she's playing in boats rather than coming for a bike ride. Gears - that's fine by me.
Toughness - on a scale of 0 to 10 on the toughometer, I'd say this was about 1.4. Very gently rolling countryside, not a huge distance (60 miles). How long will it take? Well the last two tuime we did this ride, I think it took about 7 to 8 hours but nearly half of that was in the pub at lunchtime, so if we skip that we might make it there in about 5 hours - averaging 12mph? Should be doable.

In fact if you look at the photo of apollo's yellow monstrosity above, you'll note that for him, almost any bike (short of a penny farthing) will count as a small-wheeled bike, and you'll know already that gearing on a small-wheeled bike is always higher to compensate for the wheels being so small. If you see what I mean.
