• Hi All,

I'm putting up for sale a Grandis Campione del Mondo which I am selling for a friend of mine. He has had it for a few years and has been using it as a run-around, but I have always thought it was really too nice to pootle around the village on.

The frame measures 58 cm ctc on the seat tube and 57 cm ctc on the top tube and is made of Columbus SL, manufactured between 1975 and 1980 (according to Grandis). It takes an Italian bottom bracket and a 27.2 seat post.

First the good: The paint is in pretty good condition on the bike, and the pantographed head tube badge, fork crown and seat stays are lovely, as is the curved rear brake bridge. Chromed forks are in very good condition.

Now the bad: The chrome on the seat stays is in bad condition where it meets the paint and has started to flake away, and there are the usual scuffs and chips in the rest of the paint, but the worse news is that at some point in the past, someone has seemingly clamped the down tube in a vice (I am guessing from where the damage is to remove a bottom bracket) and has put a dent in one side and a flat spot in both sides of the frame about 4 cm long (see pictures).

My friend has been riding it like that for a few years and has had no problems with it, but he wasn't going up any mountains or pushing big gears, so I asked in our local bike shop and whilst they wouldn't guarantee anything, they said it should be fine to ride and shouldn't affect the handling of the frame. I cleaned the scrapes in the paint where the damage is and they aren't rusted, so I would say the main problem is the fact that the tube is slightly ovalised in that section.

Since I cannot make any guarantees about the frame (other than to say I have seen it being ridden and have visually inspected it myself and that there are no cracks in the tube), I am offering it for sale for £60 plus postage from Italy to wherever you are. I will get a quote once I know where the buyer lives, but I would guess around £40 insured.

Happy for buyer to come and look at the frame, but I am in Italy, about an hour from Verona (where the frame was made), so I guess that limits it to those on holiday or living over here. If you do make the trip, please bring tea, cheddar and marmite with you :-)

I have tried to take pictures of everything on the frame, but if you are interested and need more detail, please send me a PM and an email address and I will take more.

    Thanks for looking,

    Dan
