  • Bus drivers don't check their blind spots.

  • Aren't you the one that deliberately cuts up cyclists ? think you have bigger problems than brake laws

*One *guy, at the time, it was kinda liberating.

Bus drivers don't check their blind spots.

Didn't they change the Highway Code to make people let buses out? Sort of feels like in last couple of years they've just started pulling out regardless of what's coming, which isn't helpful if you're halfway past on a bike, particularly as they tend to go the same speed as a bike.

They have a sticker on the back of buses that says please let pull out and everything, the driver puts far too much faith in that and just doesn't drive with enough attention on what coming up behind them.
To be fair, the next day I slowed down on a totally empty road to let a bus come out and he waited and waved me past. So, balanced restored for now.

Buses, coaches and trams. Give priority to these vehicles when you can do so safely, especially when they signal to pull away from stops.

The 2004 Highway Code had rule 198, which was similar.

It's a guideline only, however, and does not give buses any rights of way above other road users.

  • I dislike buses so much. The majority of the time it's pointless them trying to overtake/go infront of bikes. Just puts cyclists in danger for no reason. The bus is bound to stop 20m down the road due to traffic or a bus stop. The narrow 'buses/bikes only' bit from angel to kings cross is really annoying. Often the buses stop ontop of the ASL forcing cyclist to either RLJ or stop in the opposite lane. They then accelerate to get infront of the cyclists only to then slow down and stop. The cyclist can't overake since the road is bus width, many bunny hop onto the pavement and cycle through a busy bus stop annoying peds.

IMHO if the bike is moving faster or at the same speed as a bus then the bus should just let them go ahead.

  • Had a bus overtake me basically in front of a bus stop the other day, so I slowed to let him pull in and so I could overtake on the others side.
Ended up creating a dangerous road version of when two people are walking towards each other and can't decide who should go which way, as the bus driver just stopped dead and tried to get me to undertake on his inside before he stopped.
    I don't like buses much

  • one thing i learned is always try and be able to see his mirrors and make clear signals for them

  • One thing I learnt is dont try and play chicken with a bus.

  • they seem to be driving shitter since they got all those yellow stickers on the back

  • They're just like "well we have a sticker that warned you so it's your fault"

  • Epic 'Oh Shit' this morning, rode half way to work and couldn't find my key, and two thoughts came into mind. one that I dropped it or two I left it on the door, I panic and rushed back on my route hoping it was not on the floor on my route back.

Got back into the apartment and there it was...still in the door! Panic over, but thought I was a complete prick that I left it there whilst I cycled back to work. #twat

  • Better than trying to trackstand while locking your front door, losing it and breaking the key off in the lock.

I was once on a bus and as we stopped in traffic I saw someone had left their keys in their front door on this busy main road. they had a side gate with a little plaque for an accounting firm so I googled the name on my phone and called the office number. an old boy answered so i said "do you live on x road" he said yeah so I said "well you've left your keys in your front door, anyways gotta go, bye." and hung up. bet that confused the shit out of him but at least he didn't have to pay for new locks.

  • Indeed, it could have been much work ;)

  • Bus drivers don't check their blind spots.

Like lorries I am assuming a bus is like some hungry cycling eating animal. Most Belfast bus drivers are OK (10% aren't) and there's a lot of glass low down on the bus so they have quite a good view.

If they can be bothered to look. I did get honked at one by moving into his lane (bus + cycle) he moved off earlier than I expected when I moved left into the lane. Case of my bad.

  • This was my funniest Oh Shit moment:

So my old alloy handlebars used to creak a bit. Never worked out why. One November morning, a nodder has been trying to race me away from each set of lights along Holland Park Road. The lights change and I'm accelerating away from him again when my left hand begins to move independently of the rest of the bike. I realise that I'm holding the left half of the bars in my hand, it having come away from the rest of the bike. Must have been a flaw in the alloy.

Didn't let that interrupt the silly commuter racing, ofc. Powered on to Shepherds Bush Roundabout and then got off the bike.

To get back in the evening, I just visited an ironmongers in Shepherds Bush and bought a knife sharpener and a rubber tap attachment. Used the latter to jam the knife sharpener into the remaining half of the handlebars. Worked surprisingly well; did a fair amount of silly commuter racing on the way home.

  • You were lucky it was that side and not the brake side. :)

  • That would have made it harder to hold the snapped-off part above my head and wave it at the nodder as I sped off, I guess.

  • It's all about brakless and barless these days.

  • Hang on, that was seven years ago.

  • So on Tuesday i had a check up for my collar bone after my accident a few weeks ago. The Dr said all was cool, just not to crash my bike again.

Wednesday morning i'm cycling to work. I remember approaching the roundabout that i navigate everyday. Next thing i know i'm being put on to a spinal board, with paramedics asking if i know what day it is. I don't.

Thankfully nothing big is broken, but i lost a few teeth, and cut my face up so i'm pretty swollen up. Still no idea what happened and i'm yet to hear from the popo.

    Fuck this shit.

  • ouch, heal up soon James.

  • Ow, sorry to hear that.

  • That is some scary shit right there. Heal up!
