any reason your going for the surly front hub? seems pretty pricey. i think i'd go for cheaper spokes as well.
I can save you 100 quid straight away. buy my apex cranks, gxp bb and lightly used marathons for 50+post

£90 for a rack?!!
£110 for cranks on a winter bike?!!rear rack and alfine cranks could be had new for like £55 and would be the same if not more functional

Should need £50 on spokes either, just get dt comps or something

The Surly front hub is because its solid axle not QR, this is a requirement for the front rack unfortunately, if anyone can find a cheaper solid axle disc hub then I'll be over the moon. I was struggling.
I reckon I will get in touch with you when I have the money for those cranks and tyres.

http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/HSFSOMX/fsa_orbit_mx_headsetcheers! although I was already buying it from OnOne/Planet X so I guess they dropped the price since last time I looked.

I know I know.
I've wanted one of these racks for ages, I have no sensible reason why.
It is going to be my main bike througout winter but it is not exclusively a winter beater, I reckon it will probably become my daily "do everything" bike so I can keep the Vigorelli purely for fast and fun rides, so I want to put some decent bits on there.
I really like the ease of GXP Bottom Brackets too.

thats just a price I chucked in there, spokes will be whatever Guy at Harry Halls chooses to use when I give him the hubs and rims.

Cheap Shimano disc hub and change the axle for a nutted one?

^is that easy to do? never had any experience with QR hubs. #completenoob

Curious, why do you want disc on the front so much? I'm going for the same thing but finding it a pain to find compatible stuff without much hassle.

makes sense I guess -if you want it you want it. I've no experience with SRAM -how is GXP any easier than hollowtech? (Alfine is hollowtech?

I was looking in to disc brakes for my gf and got the idea in my head that it could be cool to put them on my build. If it turns out to be too much of a headache then I wont bother

Mental to spend £110 on a brand new S300 chainset. You could probably pick up a near-new Rival OCT on eBay for half that.

I'm the same but the other way around, I have no experience with hollowtech, I have GXP on my other bike so I was just going with what I know.
I'll have a look at the Alfine Cranks though if they're equally as simple.

Discs look rad and don't wear your rims.
HHSB reasoning aside they work in all conditions, are powerful and don't wear your rims. Pads last for ages as well.
What's difficult to find? carbon cross forks with disc mounts, any disc compatible front hub built into a wheel, and a brake.
simplz
If you're on a budget look out for a front wheel or even forks off a disc'd up hybrid ont bay or something, fair few hybrids are sold with discs these days.

Yeah these prices are all retail price, which I dont intend to pay. I'll be hunting down parts on here or on the bay, and I know a few peeps who work in bike shops that can maybe get me trade (+beers) for a couple of items.

That was aimed more at chak than you tdg, as you have special hub requirements...

Yeah so did I, except without the gf. If the CX guys can do it then I don't see why not. You're already having a wheel built because of the rack, so to be honest, I'd just go ahead with it.

Persuaded me earlier for sure. Hunting stuff down now. I remember seeing a dirt cheap Goldtec front disk hub loitering somewhere around here. Hoping to build on that. Why? 'cos I damn well can. Also wheel building practice.

aye well I'm already getting both wheels built as I've got the rims sat at home (3 if you include the Phil/Archetype combo sitting unbuilt for the vig)
I'm getting impatient now. I want to get started.

Hear hear. I'm thinking scrap the other build and just smash around this one for winter.

Yep. Just need two different sized cone spanners and you can follow the instructions from VeloSolo (http://www.velosolo.co.uk/faq.html#d8) While you're at it you can buy the axles and spacers (if you're going disc cog in the rear) from them too.
I did it in 10 minutes and my two Shimano XTs cost less than a single Surly disc.
-

The only part I struggled with was trying to find a good cheap disc fork.
Was tempted by the Quantec as shown on Zdrenkas bike earlier in the thread but I've ended up picking up a cheap Kona P2 disc/canti and grinding the canti mounts off of that for a third of the price. (and probably 3x the weight)

awesome I might just do that then, loads cheaper than getting a Surly hub. Cheers.
In other news, this guy has built pretty much the exact thing I am after but singlespeed instead of fixed. What a beauty.
Got a new fork and front rack;

Actually regarding the front hub, I'll just get the wheel builder to swap the skewer when he builds the wheel, stops me from fudging it up.
yeah from here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Avid-BB7-Mountain-Mechanical-Disc-Brake-Front-Rear-Caliper-HS1-160mm-Rotor-/221288024182?pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&var=520175228786&hash=item3385cb4876#ht_1451wt_2380
I'm assuming they wont have any left by the time I'm ready to buy though :(
