Rough Stuff by Andr:ew, on Flickrhttp://forums.mtbr.com/vintage-retro-classic/jack-taylor-rough-stuff-circa-1979-a-682981.html
really nice and one of my favorite sets of tires. I don't love the fenders though.

Front isn't very well installed, but Jack Taylor is way ahead of any of the UK builder at the time.
-
• #4456
Jack taylor? is ahead? at the time? those fenders are brand new, expensive, and at best guess are made by honjo.
-
• #4457
just not sure what you mean. still nice bike.

Jack Taylor seek alternative componentry and design than the traditional British builder, it's not uncommon to see French component on a Jack Taylor because they thought it was better.
Their tamden are regarded as the best you can buy in the UK.

Dear Sirs, please pardon my ignorance, but that is a horrible looking frame and one of the ugliest builds I have ever seen in my life.*

Did you even read the thread title?
-
• #4461
Yes sir... but even as a so-called functional bike I fail to appreciate it.
-
• #4462
I fail.
Glad we cleared that up.

Thought I made my ignorance in this respect clear in my initial post ;)

• #4464
...that said, would you guys actually ride this bike?
-
• #4465
needs more cable.
-
• #4466
Cables again?
^^ For moorland touring stuff, any day. It's not far from a 29er with a rack and proper handlebars. I bet it's no heavier than a Salsa Fargo. The brakes would probably suck (but at least they'd not rub).

• #4467
...it's me, not you. I'm just puzzled, that's all.

Jack Taylor - Their tamden are regarded as the best you can buy in the UK.
But he should have cable cutters so he could shorten the cables on this build. With Lynchman on this.

Unless you already knew the background to that bike, that's pretty much spot on, especially as the modern equative would be the Salsa but less componentray failure that plagued them in the recent years.

More info on that Jack Taylor...
"The 'Rough Stuff' model was first produced by the Brothers in 1953, and was made from the 1-1 drawings a Nature Photographer drafted and gave to them. Camera equipment was heavy; and he wanted to take it back country in the "roof stoof" It has the major design elements of a modern mountain bike: small diameter wheels, a high bottom bracket, a sloping top tube, cantilever brakes. and triple chainrings."

There's also the Roughstuff Fellowship;
The history of the Rough Stuff Fellowship goes way back to its foundation in 1955, long before anyone had ever heard of Marin County. It was formed by cyclists who wanted to get away from roads and cycle off-road on tracks, and byways.
