Sounds like a great ride. Sunrise is is 7:20am, sunset at 4:10pm. If we leave at 9am there should be enough time for a social ride pace and a return to London by 6pm.

I have to say last year's lunch stop seemed a little langorous for us fixielords, the yacf seemed to get right bedded down for a good hour or more. I'd rather stop for 20 mins (pint + pork scratchings) than soup, pie, salad, all that foff.
Just sayin.
that!

I'm with Ben on the swift lunch thang.
I'd rather stop a couple of times for 15 mins for Co-Op type cuisine (although there's few opportunities of that nature on this ride) than a Mr.Creosote type feast.
Big Feed happens when I'm home from a ride, and can nom to my heart's content. -

there's always Gardies in Cambridge for a chip injection

As in the Gardenia? Do they still exist? That was my introduction to mediterranean chip butties back in the 80s: chips with mayo in a pitta bread.

Food at the Maypole (your destination?) is actually really good, plus you can have BEER. Lasagne easily enough of a carrot for 60 miles.
EDIT - looks like you're aiming for Devonshire Arms? Also a very very good pub. There's a curry house around the corner which is probably Cambridge's best - the Kohinoor.

it was there up until this summer, now closed for 'renovation' I've just heard. 'twas a favourite for late-night post-library greek burgers and such.

The Ickleton Lion (in Ickleton, would you believe?)
You mean it isn't the Ickleton in Lion?
I'm disappointed that this isn't going via Luddenhoe End, natch.

I see that Mario is still running the Maypole, some 30 years since I first went there!
And the route posted above seems to miss out the guided bus route on the final approach to the city centre. What I cannot for the life of me remember is how we got from the DNA path onto that new section of road that leads up to Addenbrookes - from there I remember we head west on a spur of guided busway and then right which takes us directly to the station. Did we just climb up the embankment and over the crash barrier?

d-goods thanks for Kohinoor recommendation. I really like the Devonshire a lot.

As I recall, we didn't use the busway to get to the station....
Hills Road, the A1307 is how we reached the station from Addenbrookes last year. -

Follow the DNA path until it turns sharp right away from the railway line. Ignore this right turn, you go straight on under the road bridge, follow path and TL at road onto cycle lane. In about 300 metres TL over the rail bridge (guided busway). When over the bridge TR at busway junction and follow path to station. Much better than the road route.

I don't know why people are so bothered with the DNA path. It's a bit of fun and no cars but its over in a few minutes. Taken as a whole, the route through Newton, Gt Shelford, then over the DNA path into the guided bus route is a great way to finish the ride, but the DNA bit itself is only a small bit of that. I hope to join you for the ride - missus is hosting her baby shower that day so have the finest excuse.

I'm not sure anyone's particularly excited by it - it just provides a pleasant traffic-free interlude and some folk then enjoy racing along the guided busway, and I quite like the way it starts down that little residential cul-de-sac at Gt Shelford.
Will you be joining us, either for the last stretch or for the pub?

Can't wait to try out my Waffa winter jersey. I'm gonna be so much more prepared this year, it's almost like I'm a real bicyclist.

I grew up right near Duddenhoe End - there are some great pubs round there.
The Axe and Compasses in Arkesden does cracking food and local pints
The Cricketers Arms in Rickling Green has awesome beer garden
The Bell in Wendens Ambo was CAMRA North Essex pub of the year 2013All kind of on your way...

This. Was on it on Sunday night.

In some way for sure. Ideally, getting the train down and riding back. If its raining I'll drive to the pub :)

Did you see any of those weirdo old folk with long roller blades and ski poles?
A new and unwelcome phenomenon in the last few weeks. They fail the poles around over the whole width of the track whilst travelling at roughly jogging pace.
