^ This seems to have been missed through most of the discussion? Even if the body can recover from an effort like that in a couple of days, the idea that his mind would be fully in it, especially riding for someone else who hasn't exactly been a great team-mate in the past, and who in all honesty had sweet-FA chance of winning.
And with his stated desire to go back to the track, I'm not really surprised that his heart wasn't in a 170mile slog through the rain. And indeed, perhaps having something approaching a normal life, heaven forbid
