  • Been quite quiet around here.

They may have been around for a while, but last night I noticed for the first time in a UK supermarket the sort of vegan sandwich spreads that are now ubiquitous in Germany. Well, some of them are merely vegetarian, but the vast majority are vegan. Since the success of the Lebe Gesund brand more than ten years ago, other companies have made similar products.

The particular variant I found was from granoVita and is marketed as 'Organic Punk! Dip'n'Spread', e.g. the 'Organic Chilli Dunk'. No doubt thinking up these names swallowed up a good deal of budget for marketing consultants. :) granoVita are a vegetarian rather than a vegan company, but these spreads are vegan.

Anyway, it'll be interesting to see if they become as successful as they did in Germany, where many meat-eaters now prefer them to traditional meat-based spreads. Not in many shops yet, so here's to distribution spreading far and wide.
