IME the Messenger is a road crank sold for some reason as a track crank with the addition of a zen-like chainring.
For a 42mm chainline you will need a 103mm BB and run the chainring on the inside.
I had no issues with the crank. It worked fine.
IMO most cranks that aren't shit are fine. Work out what your price point is and whether you have any particular needs. On the whole any branded crank will do what you need it to do.
Specifically what is your question?
If stiffness is your aim something like the Srams or the On-One with an external BB would probably be a better choice (based on internet reading).

My specific question is does anyone have any experience with the Sugino MC130 crankset. It doesnt have much info about it online but appears to be an upgraded design of the RD2. Im aware that they are both road doubles, the MC130 also has extra machining done to remove the tabs for inner chainring, just like Speciates TA did with the Alize piste 130bcd. Ive seen very expensive MC130 chainrings too, a copy of 1970/80s style with anodized colors

Anyone know the weight of the Sugino RD2-MC Messanger? http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/CSSGRDMC...enger_chainset
Am building up a pre cursa and was planning on getting a miche primato crankset but heard about there being an issue with chainstay rubbing etc. Would this be a decent enough alternative? Anything else in that range that would fit without issue on the dolan?
Thanks
the Sugino Mighty Competition(MC) appears to be a stiffer/better quality design than the RD2/Messenger, does anyone have any experience with it?
both same chainline with 103mm jis bb
the rear of the arms on the MC are of similar design to shimano 7410 and 7700/7710
