GIMP is pretty good if you ain't making full on professional stuff and is free and open source, it's also called GIMP. It's linux based but works on Windows, I guess they've got an iVersion too.

"I'd just turn a blind eye to how she chooses to acquire it..."
Not getting on the moral high-horse here, but she wants to make a living relying on the intellectual property rights of her work, hence violating other peoples right to do the same isn't exactly the right way forward, even if we are talking about an evil multinational corporation... I was merely hoping to save myself some bike and beer moniez, but as "her highness" doesn't do second best at the end of the day
I would rather...I don't mind... I reluctantly choose to pay. Also I'm very keen on the idea of month-to-month subscriptions, in fact I'm applying that very principle to all financial help and support she'll be getting from now on...

That looks pretty cool... I'll get that for myself.

Thing is Adobe is one of those companies that actually is killing the future generations of talents, in my opinion. Their software is so so expansive and so if there isn't any alternatives to get a copy (I am not saying it morally correct), then how could a 15 years old kid who makes work in his bedroom have the right tools in expressing his talents? The only thing they are doing right is student discount, but the criteria is not as easy as waving your student card, like a-level students are not entitled to, not everyone can afford no go to uni anymore. I am luck that I get a lincese from work, but not everyone is. It's very humble of her to want to protect IP and all, but at the end of the day, companies likes Adobe can afford to lose a few. Big design comapnies and universities have no choice but to buy from them. Again, this is my personal opinion. The monthly subscription will actually probably work out being more expensive and it's a never ending thing. It only cost very little to get a student copy of Photoshop CS6 and you get to keep it until Adobe say we stop supporting it, with the CC aka CS7 you never truly own a copy and will forever be paying. It works for people who always update to their latest version of everything, but I know people whow are still using CS3 happily... Anyway, I don't know why am I moaning again. Bottom line is, when I was at uni, IP was everything for me, I refuse to sell work to x, y and z. 5 years later, being able to pay my rent comes first. And of course bikes...

While I see what you're saying as a 'student' of sorts I just can't afford to pay for it and I need it to complete my courses, I'm not entitled a discount and even if I was I still couldn't buy it yet.

Oops, just spotted a spelling mistake, it's right tools for that 15 years old imaginary kid, not right tooks...

Like I said, no moral high-horse in sight... I never pay for licensed software in my student day, but now, being in a position to do so, I think I should.

...and yes, the computer was invented when I went to uni.

+1 to gimp.
Anyone got any suggestions as to where I can get 48h fixed/fixed hubs from (online shop)? I know BLB do them, but there must be other choices for outlets?
I have searched, but eBay, google just returns loads of non hubs, and I can't find anything useful anywhere else :-/

UI and vector work???

Sketch is very good. I wouldn't use it for print layout or photo editing though.

Vector = line art that can be scaled with no loss of quality. Logos and so on are generally done as vector art. UI = user interface, ie stuff like websites, apps, screen-based stuff with buttons and so on.

Ahaa... Thanks.

Pardon my ignorance, but what do you use it for then, UI and vector work?
-
• #51841
Web design, mostly. Good for logos and vector illustration too.

• #51842
...obviously, thanks. Damn, I feel old.

Pixelmator is supposed to be decent Mac photo editing software. But to be honest, if you're learning the trade you ought to learn Creative Suite. That's what she'll be expected to know how to use when she goes to work in an agency.

Have you tried paint?

My daughter
thinks sheknows everything, except where money comes from... Are you saying I should go for the whole shebang? -

I miss MS Paint... Doesn't come with MS office though. Or did you mean paint-paint?

Are you saying I should go for the whole shebang?I bought the precursor to CS when I started college, but I do not personally have a big problem with the philosophy of using something to learn it. Commercial work: absolutely must be legit.
But as someone mentioned, I'm sure there are student / educational deals that Adobe do. I'm pretty certain that's the case. I'll check.

• #51849
Although I'm not really sure what the deal is with that cloud thing. Haven't used it yet myself.

I'll take that... Yet another good argument for getting her arse back to school. Thanks mate.
went to cyclesurgery, sorted it.
