Surely its more to do with spending money where you feel appropriate.
I'd be more miserable if i spent 20 quid to ride my bike in an overly organised manor and eat sweets at a designated place. Cycling thankfully is pretty diverse so there is room for all types.
If you think £20 is good value and you will enjoy it then do it.
And if not then maybe we should have a miserable ride to the pub on the same day.
