Stolen bikes

  • Good shout... only most people don't seem to give a fuck till it's too late. It like the old story of the two backpackers hiking across the Serengeti, when suddenly a pride of hungry lions appear in the distance. One guy quickly takes of his sandals off and put on his running shoes. The other guy looks at him and starts laughing, "Surely you don't think you can outrun a pride of lions?" To which the first guy replies, "it ain't the lions I've gotta outrun, it's you..."

  • The other guy them breaks the first guy's leg while he's tying his shoelaces.

  • The first guy pulls out his gun and shoots the second guy.

  • The lions run away scared, the first guy dies of dehydration a few days later.

  • No lock in the world will stop a determined bike thief, but if at all possible don' make your bike the easy target... What snottyotter said.

  • I know for sure that loads of these bikes are being sold for peanuts to guys sending containers full abroad. There's a container yard off ferry lane with guys who buy bikes no questions asked. All it would take is for the police to pop down there and run a few serial numbers through the system and i'm sure plenty of people would be reunited with their bikes. There's also a scrap yard nearby who do the same, sending them to eastern europe, they even offered me pennies for the nearly new Giant MTB I was riding when I asked about buying some scrap wheels, probably assuming it was stolen and I'd sell it cheap.

There is no winning against these scum, who steal bikes, and those who buy them to send abroad.

EDIT: I'm not in any way implying I have anything against people who export stuff, just the ones who buy bikes without checking if they are nicked, and they almost always are (who sells legit bikes for £10-£15? which is what they offer)

That is interesting information, Dazaa. It may compute with such a low retrieval rate for what's now endemic ...Brick Lane, Broadway etc.

A while back there was a problem with vintage Mercs being nicked and shipped out. Volumetrically, bikes probably offer a higher return for a 'lower risk', as it were.
    Have you reported this concern?
Maybe I'll take a reccy. quite soon...and use some connections.

  • Report it, report it, and then report it again. Report it every time you witness this sort of shit... Eventually it will be easier for the police to nick the bastard thieves than answering your phone calls... :

  • so no lock keeps away the thiefs? I was thinking of buying a cheap bike to move around London (work, ect...) but it seems I'll just go running by the looks of it...

I use a Kryptonite Fagh and a Kryponite Mini and so far this has worked.

I have reported it to the police, but knowing our legal system there is probably a law stopping them from just turning up and taking a look.
Funnily, I actually popped down to the ferry lane estate and asked a guy if anyone sold bikes there, he went in to a frenzy, stating how every bike he bought was from the police auctions, and he has had receipts for everything blah blah. Turned out he thought I was undercover police ( a teenager riding a Trek mtb wearing air jordans and jeans, maybe not the best of disguises).

Anyway, I really hope these guys get whats coming to them.

  • Hey all,

Did'nt get a pic - just seen a guy (who I know sells stolen bikes on Brick Lane) in Victoria Park with a black and white Cannondale SL (something) with Shimano 105 groupset, distinctive red road pedals (possibly Look).......say 2010/11 model--- roughly size 54/56
His mate also had a Specialised mountain bike----Silver, front suspension hard tail

These guys hang around the park a bit......easy to find them if we wanted.......they tried to sell the bikes to me.

Hope this might be of some help to someone !!!

  • In a similar vein, I saw a slightly incongruous bloke (full set of trackies, plastic bag on handlebars) riding a dolan around pelter st/columbia road this morning. Black with white logo. Sorry I'm bad at identifying dolans.

Sorry also if you are a post-ironic fixie hipster channelling the retro adidas chic look.

(Have video if this does actually sound like your stolen bike)

  • please PM me the video, thanks.

  • riding a sdolan

    Fixed.

  • very clever schick

  • Just had news of this.
Group of us firefighters ride up to London once a month for a social ride... I had to get back early as my daughter was taken in to hospital, but the others continued to Camden. Outside a pub on the corner (name and details to follow, I wasn't there), 6 bikes leant up against the wall, with the outside 3 cable locked together. The blokes went in to order, came out 5 mins later, to find the outside 3 bikes loved out of the way, and one of the others taken. It is a white/blue focus mountain bike, with skinny, cheaty shwalbe knobblies on.... More details, and hopefully pictures to come.
The cheeky cunts apparently rode up on a Saracen bso, and did a swift swap.

I told the twats not to leave anything unnattended for any amount of time....

  • A colleague found a stolen Triumph bike in Finsbury Park recently. If you think it may be yours the contact details are here

  • Thanks to this LFGSS thread, a friend of someone who was sold the bike recognised it from on here and they had the decency to get it back to me! A very rare situation indeed and I considered myself very lucky.

Since having it back, I was extremely cautious but on Friday that slipped when I locked it to a sign post with a D-lock. Half an hour later, at around 6.30pm I returned to find the sign at the top had been removed and the bike had been lifted over the top.

I know by this point my luck has probably run out but if anyone is sold or sees this bike, please PM or call 07743489784

It now has yellow bar tape as well...

    Cheers,

    Pete

  • Sometime between 11pm last night and 7am this morning, some scumbags managed to get into the communal area behind my flat and took all of the bikes they could from the bike-sheds in the 'secure' yard area at the back. This includes my own beloved Brian Rourke which has been safely carrying me around London for 4 years now.

531 steel bright orange fixed gear, with chop-and-flop bars, blue bar tape, dirty harry bmx brake levers, blue velocity deep-v on the back and a mavic kysrium on the front. Built up with campag headset and BB, and egg-beater pedals (the drive side one is stuck, so I hope that the theives rag their knuckles something terrible trying to get that off).

Here's a picture of the bike during happier times in LFGSS's very own BTOTB:

If you do see it (and let's be honest, there aren't many BR framesets with this kind of 'distinctive' colour), please clothesline whichever fucker is riding it and I will reward you handsomely

Pretty sure I saw my old bike pulling out of the junction of Kightsbridge and Hyde Park Corner as I rode home at about 19.30. The orange paintwork and blue rim looked in tact and ridden by some nodder-type with one of those Bern helmets on.

Annoyingly I was still in Hyde Park and got caught behind the lights - with the busy evening traffic I couldn't filter through and lost sight of the bike before I could get onto the junction to chase. Deeply frustrating!

  • please PM me the video, thanks.

Sorry mate just had a look and camera didn't capture as much as I thought it would have, not good enough to identify bike or rider tbh.

Must remember to find a reason to point directly at them in future..

I'm often around that way in the evening - I'll keep an eye out for it.

  • I bought this for a friend off the forum a few months back, His house got burgled last night and the bike was stolen amongst other things. In the north London area of Edmonton not sure what the post code is.

The original thread and details of the bike. still looks the same.
