Freewheel Race

  • Anyone heard of a "Freewheel Race' before? I've been listening to the serialised drama 'writing the century' on Radio 4. The current story is about a young man who is a cyclist back in the 1920s or 1930s. In yesterday's episode he explains to someone about his "Freewheel Race" where competitors remove their chain and roll down a big hill, then see how far up the next hill thay can roll.

  • me too. he really stuffed up with Dorothy.

I had never heard of such a thing before yesterday but I would give it a go. It must just be a matter of balls/gravity. I'm big on one and light on the other....

    fatty.

  • Do a search... Gravity bikes

  • I've heard of them but by a different name that I can't remember right now.
Usually they're run in conjunction with a hillclimb as a bit of fun and a chance for the slower climbers to restore a bit of dignity. Last couple that I saw advertised were of the quid entry, winner takes all variety. I don't think they bother taking off the chain unless the bike is fixed, just ziptie the pedal to the frame.
