It had crossed my mind, but I know I get on with Shimano.
To be honest I'm vacillating wildly about how to build this up, 7700 would be period correct (as would 10 speed Record?) but finding that stuff in very good condition is a) hard and b) it's pretty expensive.
Buying a modern groupset/parts is very straightforward, by comparison.
But would look out of place with a quill stem.
Godamn.
I've got as far as deciding I'd quite like either Ambrosio Nemesis OR 20mm carbon tubular rims with Pave tubs.
It's going to be a while until the frame is sorted so you've got plenty of time. Parts at reasonable prices will come up, you just need to keep your eyes peeled. Also you only really need the shifting and braking elements of the groupset to start. The rest can be switched easily.
Personally I would stick with 7700, but you could always go 7800 with a 7700 crankset. What about '07 / 10 speed Chorus? It should be a bit cheaper and isn't it effectively the same as record? Ultimately though Shimano is just that bit easier with wheels and cassette options.
As for wheels, 20mm matt carbon tubs would be great, or on this era of frames I always like the idea of deep silver alu rims. If you want to splash out, Zipp 101's, or for cheap polished kinlin xr-380 (I think someone on one of the MTB forums did that for their road bike).
