  • FACT 1: While out on road rides in the mountains I keep coming across dirt/gravel tracks I want to follow, but 23mm open tubulars aren't really suited to that abuse.

FACT 2: I have several friends who race CX and it looks a fucking blast. They want me to start.

So on my birthday I went to my friend's bike cave and we built a thing.

It's a Trek Ion CX Pro frame, with Shimano 105-based 1x10 gearing (38 up front, 11-28 in the back) and a Paul chain keeper. Running tubeless 32mm Vittoria knobbies on (last year's) Ultegra wheels. Brakes are TRP CX8.4 Mini-Vs (which are insaaaaaane).

What a wicked bike. I've been rolling through post-typhoon debris this past week or so like it's nothing.

    Post-ride:

    Still to do:

    • PLAY WITH THE FIT SOME MORE (almost there!)
    • Bontrager seatpost -> Thompson Elite setback
    • Concor Light -> ??? saddle (something a little wider, robust, not too expensive)
    • Bontrager bars -> FSA Omegas
    • Retroshift lever(s), probably
    • Shimano SPDs -> Eggbeaters (hmm) or Look MTB pedals (better)
    • Maybe change to 36 up front or 30 max out back, for insanely steep climbs, of which there are many here

Advice on pedals, saddles, general CX fit or Retroshift would be awesome. :)
