  • As the title suggests, there's a 50 or 100 mile ride happening from wynondham 20th of October. I was thinking of doing the 50 fixed as long as the route is ok. Anyone else in?

  • I did the 60 a couple of years ago. Good food stops; lots of banannas and haribo.
I could be up for doing the 50 fixed as well.

  • I want to make a list. Never made a list before.. Maybe it will encourage people to join in. So currently;

    1.12ounce

  • I don't like the idea of paying to ride my bike so unless there is beer and a pub lunch included in the entry fee I'm out.

  • It's more my neck of te woods, so I could at least recommend some good pubs!

  • I'm with Sam on this one - 20 quid for bananas and haribo just isn't good enough. Isn't it a British Cycling event too, so don't you have to be a member?

  • Maaay be on holiday then but if not I'm on it like Sonic. And the autumn/winter months are the best time for sportives.

  • What do you need to w a member of? Not even done this sort of thing before..

  • A member of the British cycling club?
Not sure never looked into it. I always get sidetracked trying to figure out what the 20quid gets you apart from a pin in number and some sweets

  • The last one was BC affiliated but you didn't need to be a member to do it.

£20 gets you entry to the ride rather than banannas and sweets. I just thought that compared to Bike Events rides like the Norwich 50/100 (which is about the same price) their attention to details in providing food at stops rather than somewhere where you can buy food was good.

Although if you have no intertest in paying to ride on the road (which can be done free) banannas & sweets won't convince you.

  • Just turn up and ride without paying. Fuck da haterz, stick it to the man, etc. That's what I'm doing. Though probably not fixed, doing the 100

I can understand people not wanting to pay to ride a bike, although I don't agree: I think that these events are fun. People go out of their way to organise a ride, and it isn't easy. There's normally a good atmosphere and you don't have to worry about choosing a route, following it or finding food stops.

    Whatever.

But turning up to an event that people have worked hard on and taking part without entering and helping them to cover costs is taking the piss a bit, in my opinion.

  • ^ This

  • If it was reasonably priced or you got a decent amount for your money I'd agree with you. Assuming say, 500 people sign up, forgive me if I don't see where that £11,000 is going. A few Marshalls is nice, but I have no desire for some energy gels and a timing chip.

    I'd pay a tenner. Not £22.

    Insurance.
    Mechanical support.
    Two separate courses with marshall's.
    Medical backup.
    Chip timing.
    Food and drink.
A good day in the saddle.

  • I have insurance, am fully capable of doing all my own mechanical work, don't want chip timing and don't need the food and drink stops, being the proud owner of pockets. And I'm pretty sure St. John's Ambulance aren't charging for their services. If people are happy to pay for these things, brilliant, but I have to be fairly careful about where my money is going.

I do however want to ride with my friends, so I'll be using those public roads. And I'm very much in the minority, I'm sure.

  • Christ there are some miserable/tight bastards out there.

It's possible I might get the train back for this - but I'd want to get out and do the century in that case or ride back down to London.

  • Just cause not all of us are

    it doesn't mean we're miserable.

I was however born out of wedlock, and also wear skinny jeans, so I don't know where I stand at all.

  • Surely its more to do with spending money where you feel appropriate.
I'd be more miserable if i spent 20 quid to ride my bike in an overly organised manor and eat sweets at a designated place. Cycling thankfully is pretty diverse so there is room for all types.

If you think £20 is good value and you will enjoy it then do it.
And if not then maybe we should have a miserable ride to the pub on the same day.

  • ^Ha, Sam, we should set up a free, miserable sweet ride. I think the idea of us all riding to the top of Gurney Road, binging on Skittles and gunning it back down over and over until we spew the rainbow is too good an idea to pass up!

  • Nailed it: call it 'work', work-related cycling is tax deductible at 20p/mile. Do the 100 miler and HMRC pay your entry.

  • ^Aha, that's amazingly long-winded BGA, I love it.

The Bramerton woods end is a better hill and its longer and there is a pub at the bottom. Puke the rainbow and wash it back down with beer.
    Lets do it.

  • I don't think I know that side, which road is it?
