I've been buying Vans Authentic for a long time and I've noticed quite a dramatic inconsistency in the shape of the shoes. There's two main examples of this and varying degrees between the two. One has a longer toe-box and thinner, curved shape and frankly looks a bit 'special needs plimsoll'. The other is much better proportioned. Here's an example of a 'well proportioned' version - special edition models seem to be more consistently this shape:
My questions are, what is the factor that dictates the shape? Different factories? Which factory make which shoe? And how can you be sure you're getting the shoes you want when you order?
