If commuting then waterproof keks over whatever (cheap but narrow at shin) and a rainproof jacket both of which can be bagged as soon as rain stops. I like sealskins socks if its absolutely sharting down. Mudguards are a win because you can bench the plastic outfit as soon as the serious wet stuff stops. In winter when it gets cold the Swrve wax jacket is ace!

Yeah, mainly commuting. Or just heading to the pub/ shops. Waterproofing trainers sounds like a great idea, may have to give that a go before shelling out on new shoes and pedals.

Mudguards- honestly, I wish I'd got a bike with them long before I actually did so.

I guess it depends on what work it is you do. I don't have any experience commuting on a bike but have done a lot of walking in the hills. Personally I hate all that gortex crap as you get just as wet from the sweat plus feeling over heated. We used to take canoe sacks in our bags to keep stuff dry. Its surprising how quickly the body drys out once the rain stops and you swap the wet kit for dry, but if it starts to rain again don't be lazy to swap back into the wet stuff, its cold at first but you soon warm up :)
Anyway I'll be giving it a go this winter so may have a few more ideas more relating to cycling by the spring/summer or whenever the sunshine comes back.

When I was commuting I'd cycle in Lycra, change into dry clothes at office, and have a dry pair of shorts for the journey home. I can live with wet shoes.

Commuting - who cares, as long as you are warm. Distances are short and there's probably showers at each end.

we dont all live in swanky mansions with luxuries like running water or indoor plumbing you know.

Who said anything about running water? #goldenshowers

I never considered a golden shower, it'd warm me up but I'm not sure it would help with the smell.. One out of two ain't bad though

Don't fuck an ice maiden, or none out of two will be achieved.
You talking commuting or training / riding / fun?
