Italian BB for a frame with damaged threads

Posted on
  • Does anyone know of a place selling italian bottom brackets which would fit my Carlton track bike I bought from a chap on here who'd helpfully been using it with an english BB, nicely destroying the threads.

Not sure if that ^ is italian sized, I can always ring up tomorrow but if anyone knows of a stockist that would be handy.

    Cheers,
    Sam

  • I don't think it matters: AFAIK threadless BB have tapered cups, so fit any size shell.

Surprised if a Carlton had an Italian BB; either way, one just won't fit the other.

Check Sheldon Brown for a handy table which explains what happens if you try to mix shells and cups.

  • was starting to doubt it was even a carlton, the guy who sold it was a nightmare. But it's got "CAR BRITISH" stamped in the BB shell which I thought was OTT for a fake

  • Italian is both a different size, and for the DS cup it's a different direction to British; as SS said, check the Sheldon table

  • I find the original premise a bit hard to believe. If you insert a British BB into an Italian shell, it will just fall out. The threads of the BB won't even engage those of the shell so either this is some mega bodge or it is just a corroded BB in a corroded shell.

If you measure the width of the shell, you'll know if it's British (68mm) or Italian (70mm)

  • Sorry, to clarify its a British bb designed to go on in a shell with damaged threads like the one I linked but its about 3mm too small so the whole crankset moved around loads

To clarify further, the bottom bracket you linked to in the OP is for an originally english threaded shell which will have a diameter around 34.8mm - probably a bit more than this now if the threads are knackered/it's ovalised etc.

Your italian bb shell will be 36mm in diameter - again, probably a bit more than this now if the threads are knackered/it's ovalised etc.

Some threadless bottom brackets may be tapered but I wouldn't say the one you linked to is and none of the ones I have dealt with have been either.

I don't know if a 36mm diameter threadless bottom bracket exists but if it does that's what you need.

A quick google search says that the VO threadless bb is of a different design to most and will fit most… Read further and even this one won't fit Italian because of the diameter.

  • I don't know how much this frame is worth to you but I had a Colnago frame with knackered BB threads renovated and as part of that they added metal to the inside of the BB and cut a British thread into it.

Oh yeah, I meant to mention this in my post.

Don't know for sure that a steel frame can be reamed and sleaved but I've sent at least one ali frame to place in Edinburgh myself (I'm in Glasgow, probably somewhere more local to you that'll do it) and recommended it to plenty others.

The one I sent cost about £50 which is less than the cost of that VO bb which won't even fit your frame.

  • Thanks for all the help. I'm off to uni next week so it's unlikely that I'll have time to sort something out now anyway, I'll probably have to wait until I'm back in December. The frame itself is being using for beater tbh, I'm not interested in spending any more money on it that's necessary. Also I have very little knowledge of bottom brackets so it might take me a while to track down what I need, but all of your advice is much appreciated, has clarified a few things!

  • Yes, a steel frame can be sleeved and reamed.

But I'm not sure an aluminium or titanium one can.

The one I sent to be done was aluminium I think. Possibly carbon with an ali insert. I imagine ti would be a lot more difficult to ream.
