I think if clipless was the way to go you'd see other FGFS riders doing it.
Get horizontal straps, do them up a little more loosely if you're scared but honestly I'm sure most FGFS riders hurt themselves every now and then, it's sort of the nature of throwing yourself at things while attached to a bike.
