  • That was me, thought it'd be better quote otherwise it makes no sense, but yeah, eBay have a partial refund bit where you can explain to the seller the problem and they then refund you thee money you've requested, or they offer you a different sum for the partial refund

That's what I'm going for, but she's not responded. I don't know whether eBay will force a partial refund in any situation or whether they'll just make me return it for a full refund.

  • I should go to 10 speed at some point, and those are all 8/9 I think (74XX, 65XX).

10-speed cassettes fit 8/9 speed hubs in Shimanoworld. Just need a 1mm spacer under the cassette for most 10-speed because the spider/sprocket carrier is dished.

eBay don't really get involved till the end, most of its automated, she should respond on eBay and if she doesn't then you go for the full refund, with no need to send te frame back, then all of a sudden the partial refund looks like a brilliant idea on her part

  • if she doesn't respond, open a dispute with paypal outlining what's happened. They should side with you and give you you're money back. Also once you've opened the dispute it will take the money out her account/freeze it in paypal, so she's more likely to do something about it.

  • They can't do this, technically you could claim the item was not as described and get a full refund with no need to send the frame back, and they should cover expenses for returns as its then at fault

That's what I thought, but I googled it and it seems that the seller can offer to pay for the postage but don't have to.

It's an arse, she's an arse.

I'm going to try my luck with eBay on Friday and hope that they side with me. I'm worried it's going to be a case of "them's the rules" and they'll not see the situation for what it is: she's not going to be able to sell it for much as it is, and she's not got the knowledge or inclination to list it properly. She just bought it off someone (probably for not much as her reserve was £50) and tried her luck. I don't think she's going to go through relisting it properly and just bin it.

I don't really want to think of a 20 year old SLX Rossin frame getting binned because someone thinks it's dead.

    'You da man'.

    Cheers mate. Again.

I have to go through the eBay process to get a block on her funds. I contacted her through the official dispute thing last week and asked for a refund, she's not responded so on Friday I'll escalate it to the eBay buyer protection/resolution centre thing. They'll give a response 'within 48 hours'...

    From eBay:
"If you've received an item that wasn't as described, we'll usually help you return it to the seller and then refund you."

It's the 'return it to the seller' bit. I'm hoping the 'usually' suggests that they might be flexible.

But as was said, hopefully she'll see the official 'you have to refund all this money' email and realise she'd be better off just meeting me in the middle.

  • Next question: What colour for the Woodsin?

I'm not paying for a 4 colour 'look' job again. Italian pearl enamel is £100...

    Yellow? I love yellow bikes.
Sorry to see this go (either back to the seller, or to Woodrup to be repainted) but needs must.

  • Ah, so good.

Is that 10sp Chorus? I'm running out of reasons not to buy a nice Colnago road frame that belongs to a friend of mine and that's exactly the sort of kit I'd think of putting on it.

it's 10 speed Centaur with Record cranks, pre-2008 ergo shape.

  • ive got tektro cantis and archetypes, are swisstop greens going to be my best bet? the standard pads have reports of being not that great, but the cantis get good reviews

Yep, greens preserve the brake surface if that's what you're into. They are silent and pack a punch, unlike standard black swisstops.

  • ordered thanks all

  • I've always found greens really noisy.

    Good. But loud.

  • Anyone ever rattle canned rims? Current wheels are green which is fucking nasty.

Don't know if it's worth my time doing it properly, sanding off the original finish, then a few coats and clear coat.

Or just rattle can it and just hope to fuck that it stays.

  • I have.

Unsurprisingly doing it properly (sand, primer, a few thin coats of paint) lasts better than a bodge.

Did you rebuild the wheel or did you just tape off the spokes with masking tape?

  • +1 to swisstop green for braking power and longevity hence better value than standard black pads. Anodizing on rims will go eventually it will be a month with greens. If they had archetypes with non anodized surface i'd love that like A23.

The best method to keep the colour is go for disc brakes /trollololol

  • Or buy carbon rims - significantly less messy also.

years ago I had some grim red capppucino's or somesuch. I had a go at rattlecanning with black hammerite but it all flaked off and looked just as bad.
I then bought some graffiti-remover spray from poundland hoping it would at least get rid of the hammerite.
I've no idea what they put in that tin but I was back to shiny aluminium in seconds!

I painted the rim before building the wheel.

Thanks. I'm not very up on all the Campag groups.

  • Got any pics of the full rig?

  • A Max somec? good buy mate!

  • Been umming and ahhing over a bike to take with me to southern Spain, I'm down in the hills there once a year and keen to get out a bit on a bike. It's a mix of off road dirt tracks, cattle trails and other little used roads. There's also a large number of gorgeous new twisting mountain roads (thanks, EU grants). I've been torn over what to take down there, road bike, CX bike or mountain bike.

Anyway noticed Dolan's clearance corner had a CX frame that ought to fit so I thought screw it let's try that, ought to be able to be used dual purpose - solid enough handling off-road but also reasonable on-road.

I'm thinking right now of putting a Shimano group on with STI shifters, maybe move over an existing Ultegra groupset or find something lower down at a good price. What I'm wondering mainly is what to do about the brakes and secondly rims.

This isn't northern European CX racing, there's almost no mud, but plenty of dust and on-road plenty of long descents available. Would something like the Avid Shorty provide enough power/modulation on descents? would something else be a better option overall? Is it all just going to suck?

Regarding rims and tyres I'm not sure where to look yet. Like I say there's no mud, but plenty of gravel, dust and rough uneven surfaces but also plenty of new roads. Not looking to go at blind speeds, or be racing people about. Would have thought 700x32c tyres would do the job more or less right? May have to get a wider set of rims, as I think all I have unused are some older Open 4 CDs which are quite narrow.
