Freestyle Fixed Gear obviously demands some sort of foot retention in place of the missing brakes, i wonder about which is the best option though.
When doing tricks and shenanigans we tend to want a quick exit strategy from the pedals in case of a bail, with standard BMX platforms this is a no-brainer but when we need foot retention this becomes highly complex.
Here is how i see the options:
Toe Clips: require correct strap installation and should normally be adjusted/tensioned (using the strap mechanism) once clipped-in, very tricky to make a quick exit, end then only straight backwards out of the pedal.
Holdfast: any horizontal velcro type straps, not able to adjust/tension easily, mostly left loose enough for shoe to slide in/out, but shoe becomes tight if moved forward or if wearing various shoes. Again very difficult to exit in emergencies if setup properly.
Powergrips: tensioned by twisting foot horizontally, wear out easier ?, more exit options.
Clipless: tension adjusted by screws, very much restricted to which shoes you have cleats installed on, apparently ALWAYS unclip automagically if in a crash but also in normal use ?
I am mainly interested in the safety in case of a crash/bail but what do you guys think about Freestyle/Tricks on a fixed gear and foot retention ?
